I need help with a History essay I'm writing.

Did the german ppl elected Adolf Hitler on the premise that he would be a dictator or was he elected and then made himself a dictator against their will?'

Thankful for any pointers or thoughts, especially from a German guy with insight (or at least with grand ma's) info!

They elected him on the basis that he would be a pushover and let the ambitious people in charge of his party rule through him. He surprised everyone by putting his foot down. That's what we learned in history, anyway.

Hitler was popularly elected by the German people due to the dire economic times wrought by the Global Depression of the 20s-30's. Upon election, Hitler then assumed emergency powers after the Reichstag "mysteriously" burned down. He started rounding up Communists and socialists and other leftists and began a NAZIFICATION of Germany.

No...the German people did not elect him to be dictator.

No problem, Jonas. :) Those links I posted looked like they had lots of information you could use. When I was in History, the whole class had to go watch Schindler's List. I forget what my paper was on for the Germany part of the course. Something about the start of WWI could have been avoided, I think... don't ya just love useless information? :)

They elected him because of his wicked moustache and the promise of snazzy military uniforms.

Don't forget they were all excited about the upcoming new dance move: The GooseStep. This new dance started in Poland, spread faster that American Idol and would soon come to be highly visible on highways throughout Europe, redefining the term 'Dancing In the Streets' invented of course by Alfred Einstein the contemporary Circus Carnival midget from Paris.

I saw that too. I always thought there was a closet aspect to Adolf, especially after he published his now infamous book Mein Arse; but I thought the ballerina slippers and the tutu were a bit much.

I will let the sheeple believe what they want. Particulary on this sensitive issue.

But on a more serious note, you shouldn't get your history lessons on GFY, they will be severely squeued (sp?)

Hitler was elected on a hope of restoring economic prosperity and germanic dignity. The disputed lands in Poland and Czechoslovakia were in the germans' minds justified annexations given the history of the region: big cities in these regions were founded by german colonization efforts in centuries before, and the fact that the Holy Roman Empire dominated and ruled over Bohemia and had been at war with Poland since the Dark Ages over Danzig/Gdansk corridor as well as a few other minor properties.

My research tells me, Hitler did not want a global war but in trying to defend the new conquests, the war just came to him.

It's also worth noting, that Hitler was not alone in this. There were several other individuals behind the scenes that were with him from the beginning of his political career..up until the end.

I know this will be controversial, but i also don't think the germans intended to exterminate the Jews, but rather there was an effort at deportation and according to some readings I have done it was the negative turn of events that tragically resulted in fewer war rations and in their drive to stem off the Allied advance, the germans resorted to using Jews as labor in their camps.

He was democratically elected in 1933. In 1937 he held a referendum with the simple question: "Do you approve of the National Socialist Government or not?"

98.8% of the voters answered "yes."


Germans don't know their own history at this point. He who wins the war writes its history.
