snapnames and networksolutions

i got a backorder for a domain that is registered with networksolutions. Does anyone know if they drop it instantly or keep it for an X number of days? If yes how many days?

thanks!

depends on which status the domain currently has : active?expired?redemption period?

hi XM, it will expire in 2 weeks, but i remember some registrants keep the domains for longer time period before making them available for registration.

Domains don't drop instantly. They go thru at least 2 different statuses before being dropped.

There are 8 statuses total, 3 are the ones you want to look for.

ACTIVE
REGISTRAR-LOCK
REGISTRAR-HOLD
REDEMPTIONPERIOD
PENDINGDELETE
REGISTRY-LOCK
REGISTRY-HOLD
PENDINGRESTORE

The 3 statuses you should look for are REGISTRAR-HOLD, REDEMPTIONPERIOD and PENDINGDELETE.

Typically when a domain gets expired, it goes like this:

REGISTRAR-HOLD (1-45 days, each registrar is different)
|
|
V
REDEMPTIONPERIOD (37 days exactly)
|
|
V
PENDINGDELETE (6 days exactly)
|
|
V
AVAILABLE <-- this is the day when dropcatchers go crazy.

When a domain expires, the domain gets removed from the zone files, so that it no longer resolves. Typically these domains are put into REGISTRAR-HOLD. The registrar is giving you time to renew the domain, it's different for each registrar. The typical window for this status is 1-45 days, although I've seen longer frequently.

REDEMPTIONPERIOD is 37 days exactly from the UPDATED date. Ignore the expires field, go by the status+updated date and you'll always know when the domain is gonna be available.

PENDINGDELETE is 6 days exactly from the UPDATED Date at 2pm EST, however sometimes it's up to 45 minutes before the whole drop is complete. They do it 'slow', all domains aren't available at 1 second.. it's done progressively over the course of a certain amount of time.

Always eyeball the status, if it's ACTIVE you know the shortest route is going to be 37 days + 6 days before it's coming off. There's no way around this.

they keep it for about 45-60 days after domain expires

then it can take months. If they decide they like the domain they can keep it for as long as they wish.

If the status is ACTIVE or REGISTRAR-HOLD, yeah it can take a long time to come off. I've seen domains sit in REGISTRAR-HOLD for months.

As soon as it goes to REDEMPTIONPERIOD tho, you know 37+6 days.

SURE! there are 400 ppl and they ask each of them if he likes domain name which is about to be deleted, if someone likes it they save it.
