Flat LCD monitors.. which one?

Hi,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on a flat screen lcd monitor. I am looking for an 18 or 19 inch... Now ive been looking at stores such as Best Buy and Circuit City and they have some decently priced monitors at that size but they have brand names such as MAG and Envision. Are these any good? Or should I spend just a little bit extra for a Dell or an NEC/Mistubishi model? (Would have to get 18 inch as per my budget for these models).

What do you guys think? ;) Also do I need a new graphics card or can it just plug into any old monitor port like the old ones.. ive never had one of these before so I dont know..

thanks

How good are they for playing games? How much ghosting?

iroc409 06-03-2003 03:37 PM

anybody used the viewsonic vp201m or vp230mb?

how about the samsung 241mp?

these are the ones i'm interested in... they look like they kick ass, although that dell is a prett good deal... although i'd probably be inclined to go with a mitsubishi or nec or something for the 6$6-700 range

I play unreal tournament 2003 a lot... I don't see any noticable difference compared to a CRT.

Plays fine for me

Just another vote here for ViewSonic. Had it about six weeks now and it just rocks -- and rules! Couldn't be happier, Wash.

bhutocracy 06-03-2003 05:26 PM

I've got 6 Syncmaster 191N's - all fucking wicked.

i'm looking into the veiwsonic pro series... probable can't go wrong there, but the new samsung 241mp looks pretty sweet.. if it's image quality is comparable.

although i'll probably just get a bigger samsung crt. i love mine, it's just getting a little small.

nuttin bad here. Been using an 18" dell ultrasharp for about 4 months and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Dravyk 06-04-2003 12:53 AM

Dell specifically? They have the worse support in the industry the past two years running. Seems they've made their lower end computers and have been pushing them big in those commercials. Well something has to give with all that advertising, and from I hear it's support. They are much more interested in pushing a few million underpowered systems and cornering the market right now (nothing wrong with that) but at the expense of having a good rep. I bought Dell before, but I wouldn't touch them now. Just my :2 cents:

Hey you might get lucky. But if it ever needs servicing, needs to be sent back or anything, you'll probably get screwed.

for gaming, i recommend the NEC 1760V. i just picked one up a couple of weeks ago and i *LOVE* it. i played with it for a while at compusa - it was the first LCD i found that did not have the ghost effect during gaming.

i picked it up for $415 incl shipping from newegg, looks like it's up to $439 incl shipping there. still a good price (considering it was $499 at compusa, plus sales tax)

don't bother with the NEC 1760VM btw. it's $100 more and all you get is DVI and an additional 10ms response time! yuck.

yeah, it's not 18" or 19", but i can't recommend it enough. i moved to it from a 19" viewsonic PS790 CRT. i have not looked back.

$1,179.00 from Newegg

Don't know too much about Sony LCD's.

Stramm 06-04-2003 02:19 AM

I'm using a sony M81 now for nearly 18 month. It's brilliant but I guess you don't get it anymore now. And at that time it was a lil bit pricey

I'm considering the 23" version: http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage....006-031-01.jpg

but it's $2100.... I wish I could check it out first.... hate buying shit sight unseen.

shermo 06-04-2003 04:11 AM
