why is the usa not using "metric"...
the usa must be one of the last countries still using
lbs, inches, feet etc. metric is the way to go imho, never seen a country change back once they started using the metric system ! |
Beats me, really.
|
Totally agree. If we would switch it would make things a lot easier.
|
To antagonise the French :winkwink:
|
Isn't it used in the military, in all science jobs etc...
I think they are still slowly changing towards it, I read an article about it a while back in the NY times or something. Just failed in the 70's when they first tried, I guess they didn't do it properly. |
Because we have no desire to emulate the Europeans -- if we want to be like them, we'll all have to take estrogen hormone therapy, chop off our nuts, and start sucking cock.
I for one say, "No thanks." |
:BangBang: metric Leave that to pansy countries that put their steering wheels on the right side and drive on the left.

Don't knock the cock :Graucho

I should probably point out that while the UK is officially metric, it uses barely more metric measurements than the US. People here also stick with the pounds, ounces, miles, and pints. (Especially pints.)
The answer is really simple... Any standards conversion is difficult. Changing the way people think isn't easy. The US, as a very large country in relative isolation, just didn't have enough reason to do it. The UK, as a powerful island nation, was in a similar situation. The fact that we're both stubborn as hell and don't respect Europe much probably didn't help. |

On 23 September 1999 NASA scientists lost the $100 million Mars Climate Orbiter because they instructed the craft in imperial (inches and feet) instead of metric (metres) measurements. It sent the probe, which was set up for metric data, off course and burning up in the Mars atmosphere.

Some states like New Mexico have been integrating the metric system for years, like milage signs on the freeways also showing distances in Kilometers

Who cares what the country uses as a measurement system. Use whatever works for your own applications and learn em' both, it's not that freakin difficult....we use both in the car tuning biz:thumbsup

Any science job or university stuff uses Metric. There is no scientific basis to the imperial system. If you need to hang on to it because you are too stupid to handle the metric system then you may as well do your counting in roman numerals too. Enjoy the stone age, morons. |
we just do it to fuck with the rest of the world. There is no *reason* to do it other than we can. :thumbsup

I get 1 1/3 bushels to the hogshed and thats the ways I likes it.

Interestingly, standardisation of the inch for worldwide use occurred only in 1958. (The inch was standardised worldwide as 25.4 millimetres exactly.)
Prior to that the United States, Great Britain, and Canada each had their own definition of the inch, and in each case the inch was defined in terms of metric units, the only set of internationally-accepted measurement standards. A problem still exists for the foot, where the international foot (based on the 25.4 mm inch) and the survey foot (based on the 25.40005 inch) are both in use. Over 100 miles they differ by 32 cm, or over one foot. |
