Dot porn vs sex vs xxx

Hey,

Which of these is more preferable for a highly sought after keyword, like lesbian or milf?

Or are they all equally garbage? :pimp

The Porn Nerd 07-04-2025 10:18 AM

All pretty generic so lots of competition I would say.

For highly sought after keywords like "lesbian" or "milf", here's how the domain extensions compare:

.XXX:
  • Most recognized adult-specific TLD with longer market presence
  • More established reputation in the adult industry
  • Some SEO professionals note it may be easier for ISPs to block
  • Has more brand recognition with users

.PORN:
  • Clearly identifies content type
  • Less established than .XXX but very direct
  • More recent addition to adult TLDs

.SEX:
  • Broader appeal and less explicit than .PORN
  • May attract different search intent (educational vs. entertainment)
  • Potentially less likely to be automatically filtered

For high-value keywords, .XXX appears to have the edge in terms of industry recognition and established presence, though each has pros and cons. Many adult site operators actually maintain multiple domain extensions (particularly keeping a .COM alongside specialized extensions) to maximize visibility and avoid potential filtering issues.

The effectiveness ultimately depends on your specific SEO strategy, target audience, and whether you're more concerned about direct navigation or search engine visibility

Is your question for ranking or branding purposes?

I see there were a few other posts while writing this, so in addition to what was said....

I think no matter how many extensions come out, .com will always hold the most value, in terms of trust, rankings, and what people will remember. You can rank any extension in the top results, but with so many other factors, at the end of the day, I personally would go with a .com, like milfkeyword or keywordmilf for your main site.

Thelegacy provided a good comparison on the domain extensions you were asking about.

So, if you have the funds and time for it, grab the other extensions mentioned, build landing pages and use those to promote your .com

But really, how important are names? Look at reddit, what does it even mean? Clearly, that's not how you spell "read" or even if you say "red", what's the extra d? And yet they rank well with a misspelled, sort of made up name. It's definitely not a keyword name. So, was it good branding, luck, combination, or other factors? Many other similar examples, so who knows.

I do know that personally, I would go with a .com

Thanks guys :thumbsup:2 cents:

Really appreciate the input! Picked up some one word high traffic categories in .porn and .sex mainly at a discount last year and they are up for renewal. It's for future branding potential, yes

These are broad keywords so no TM issues hopefully.

Cheers :pimp

.com is more trustworthy to paying users, .xxx has a more shady image

.xxx is no way shady, an obvious adult or pornography site...

.com is not in the question, so why bring this into the thread?
