The earth rotates around the sun and during the summer the North Pole points towards the sun. As a result, there is a certain period each summer when the sun never sinks below the horizon and the sky is light throughout the whole 24 hours. In the winter the situation is precisely the opposite. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the Midnight Sun.

The lowest latitude at which this happens is the Arctic Circle.

The following countries has some territory above the Arctic Circle:
Norway
Sweden
Finland
Russia
Canada
USA (Alaska)
Denmark (Greenland)

In the winter it is dark for 3 months. You really don't appreciate the sun before it's gone.
