How long are your sites down before you switch hosts?
what's reasonable downtime before you say fuck it and move all your shit to a different host?
|
i posted that before , someone said it depends 6 hour to 48 hour updating dns from all over the world..
after someone from candid hozting told , if you buy from them , he can help you for this bla bla :winkwink: |
dude holly fuck.
If the server is EVER down I fucking phone them up and bitch at them. Usually I dont have to do that because 1) Rackshack is never down, when it is everyone is down. 2) the techs at ISprime are always online, so I can chill and maybe drink a beer with them. |

You can't really say.
If I have a rock solid host thats been reliable for years, and they have some catastrophe and go down for 48 hours, I'm not going to move. If, like my first host, they're sketchy.. a few hours might do it. |
13 seconds

One strike and their out, yes I switched a few times at least I don't get mad at the same host twice.

This is true. IF your host and you dont get along, you shouldnt be doing business with them. You need to trust your host to be your conscious This question shouldnt be a problem in the first place. if your server is down, and its a reason out of their control (you have special hardware) you cant really blame them for it. I dont have a customer on my network that I dont get along with. If myself or my techs arent doing our job properly. I deserve to get the can. Conversely if my customer wants something I cant really give them. I have to let the deal die, or can the deal altogether. |

Just getting ready to head to bed as I read this post so....
I was down for 18 hours Tuesday, 8 and half hours yesterday and over 12 hours today. Should I switch? Too late as all I'm waiting for now is the nameservers to catch on everywhere. Bye bye. PS. Thankfully the bulk of my traffic is at another server with my main host which was kind enough to transfer everything over from that "other" host. I thought picking up another server at a cheap costing host to throw a few domains on was a good idea. LOL Good night! |
3 strikes and you're out

Dont Ever, Ever go with Vital Stream!! we have been down for 12 hours at a time on 3 different days. and they have been down for 10 minutes at a time about once a week because of their dns server.
We switched over to sinhosting, so far its great! transfered everything over and the dns transfered flawlessly, we were down for maybe 15 minutes. Best transfer we have ever had! :thumbsup |
Except when they warn me in advance I expect to be down very fucking little. Worst case is down for 30 seconds or so, basicly long enough to reboot.
Now on occassion when they email me a week in advance and let me know they will be upgrading something and my site may be unreachable for a few minutes, then I am cool with that. |
If it happens once, be patient. Phone them, yes, but be patient and forgiving. If they get things up and running in a timely fashion then it's all good. After 2 days I would be thinking about moving barring certain circumstances.
If it happens again within 6 months I would be a bit more firm with them. 3rd time's a charm...... I'd be looking for greener pastures. |

Why not host at 2 different places and split your shit between them that way if one is ever down chances are 99% that the other host won't be too.
By 2 different I mean in different data centers maybe 1 on west coast and one on east coast? |
I just changed because I was down for some hours no email or nothing so that morning I went to another host.at least let me know...

Our first host (don't think they're even around any more) had some serious downtime within the first couple of weeks we were with them. My partner tried to help them track down the problem, and when he suggested they'd been hacked, the tech he was working with took this to mean WE had hacked them, and totally launched on us. We left the next day (well, as soon as DNS propagated).
Our next host - no names *coughcattossingcough* had fairly infrequent downtime, but when it happened, it was bad. Cost us A LOT. We stayed with them way too long, because, as in many abusive relationships, there were long periods of good interspersed with short periods of very, very bad. But when it was good, it was so good! Sigh. We finally saw the light, but as often happens, we launched right into a new relationship that *seemed* okay, but was still abusive...wait, I'm going off on a tangent here. Okay, so we finally moved; new host had very brief periods of downtime, but they seemed to happen all the freakin' time. Like several times a DAY. So we moved AGAIN, within a month. NOT fun. I freaking HATE moving sites, worse than moving physically even, almost. I don't want to spam *coughprotechhostingcough* but we've been VERY happy with our new host. None of which answers the question. I guess my answer is if your host goes down long enough or often enough to remarkably affect your bottom line, get out. Yeah, if it's a fluke, that's understandable, but if you get frequent down time combined with frequent excuses, get out; it ain't gonna get better. |
