Cheap domain registrars???

I currently manage most of my domains through NameSilo, Namecheap, and Moniker. Are there any more affordable and reliable options in 2024?

Denny 10-29-2024 08:54 AM

Currently I mostly use Porkbun.

2intense 10-29-2024 08:59 AM

probably dynadot is the cheapest

cerulean 10-29-2024 09:10 AM

I use porkbun, and I affiliate for namecheap. It doesn't get much cheaper than porkbun in my experience.

Zuzana Designs 10-29-2024 09:17 AM

I've been using MojoHost for the last couple of years.

Me too, and great support. They're just $9.95.

try to find out on tld-list - there are all the best prices, including for renewal (for me the most important)

Due to costs having raised by the .COM registry those domains are now $10.99. We basically are selling them just above cost and giving away domain privacy.

I have my domains with Mojohost
why have them elsewhere when you can have a great host and domains in 1 place?
Most domains I paid for 10 years, now let's hope Brad keeps the ship sailing :)

One of the very first things I learned in this whole online thing is to avoid keeping your domains and hosting in the same place. Backups too.

Wel beat me, for 7 straight years I have been getting the best experience with Mojo, all previous companies did let me down big time.

Be careful with Porkbun, I had been a champion of theirs for years until I got burned and they almost caused me to lose $20k worth of domains.

I had a .page domain for a project idea and it had been sitting unused since I registered it 2 years ago. Some spam reporting company decided to completely rely on AI for things and falsely flagged the domain as the originator of spam even though the domain is not in use and pointed to porkbun's nameservers.

But they reported it to the .page domain management company who then reported it to porkbun and porkbun flagged my account and stopped allowing domain renewals.

Never emailed me about the issue or nothing, just stopped renewing my domains.

Because they send you 2 emails daily for 30 days before and after a domain expires I always ignore those emails from them and since I have so many domains I get them nonstop.

But one day I accidentally opened one instead of deleting it and saw 3 of my very expensive domains in the "this domain expired, you have 30 days to renew it" list and got concerned because they were set to autorenew. Signed into my account and tried to manually renew them just to get a generic browser alert "unable to process payment, please contact support"

I posted about it on X (formerly Twitter) and thankfully Richard Kirkendall (if you still browse here, haiii) jumped in and helped me resolve the issue and I've been slowly moving all my domains back to Namecheap but under their Spaceship brand.

Porkbun did resolve the issue on their end, renewed my domains for me, and assured me new processes will be put in place to make sure the issue doesn't happen again, but their complete lack of care until I went viral on X about it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I was not shitting on mojo at all. I'm a fan and former client. Nothing but good things to say about that company and it's owner. By far my favorite host.

Just saying tho. Hopefully you never have to learn the hard way not to keep all your eggs in any one basket, shit happens.

that did happen in the early years of my webmaster years. ( a nightmare) I am somewhat shaped by painful lessons in trust. It makes ya a skeptical person. I had the pleasure of meeting Brad in person, a pleasant experience. And I value that.

I was not assuming anything from your post but a friendly heads-up things can go wrong. I Appreciate that! If we had talked 25 years ago, I would have had no bad experiences thanks to this advice. :thumbsup

I understand their apprehension. What you wrote is definitely a red flag, even if you weren't at fault. From their perspective, they probably deal with a tremendous amount of malicious individuals because they provide very cheap domains. Complicated situations are poison for companies, and the first reaction is always to separate and distance. I'm not defending them, but I understand it.

I've heard the same kind of horror stories with Namecheap, even though I run affiliate for them. Unique situations will invariably result in this happening at some point or another. What brings me comfort is that they learned from their mistake, even if it required going viral to make it happen. How many other companies would be willing to talk to you rather than just ignore you?

I think the same thing would happen at any registrar.

I personally ran with name.com for over a decade, until they stopped replying to support tickets and jacked up the prices nearly 2x. They just didn't care about my business. When I approached Porkbun, I did it from the perspective of a client rather than a sales ticket, and they treated me with a lot of respect. I appreciated that, and it was why I chose them over Namecheap.

One thing I've learned in life, especially in business, you need to keep an eagle eye on everything.
