I own FrugalJohn.com, a West Coast budget escort directory that earn famed in early 2002. My site was the topic of several features, including Salon.com, SexTV, DeutschWelle Radio, and AVNonline. Its niche was that during the big tech downturn, the techies of Silicon Valley could no longer afford the high priced escorts of the San Francisco Bay Area, so I created a large list of $200 or less call girls.

Not only did he steal the name, but he stole the column layout and even the small verdana font I use! See Chicago section:

He also created the website Erotica-Guide.com, stealing the best known name in escort directories, Eros-Guide.com.

Needless to say, Dude will get a letter from my attorney on Tuesday.

FrugalJohn.com gets around 3,000 steady uniques a day and makes about $1800-$2500 a month. I checked Alexa and this thief has a rating of 3,600,000 which means he gets zero traffic.

I just talked to my attorney. He says the best I can hope for is for the webmaster to take down the site after a warning. The next option is to go to court and get a cease and desist order. Since it is mostly likely this guy is broke and hasn't made money from his usurpation, he doubts I could sue for money.

This guy also rip-off'ed Eros-Guide and DateCheck. I should probably contact them to share in the burden of attorney fees.

If you don't have the name "frugaljohn" legally trademarked,
your attorney won't be able to do anything but empty your bank
account.

I know it sucks to have your site ripped by a lazy copycat, but
about all you can to is make sure your site is far better than the
copy, thus hopefully retaining your customer base.
