New cases of a deadly virus spread by ticks are emerging across with the world, including in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. An urgent health warning has been issued in what has been described as the current biggest threat to public health - which could be being accelerated by climate change. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) has recently broken out in Iraq and Namibia. Meanwhile, Pakistani officials have reported two deaths. It is "highly likely" the disease could reach Britain, according to insiders speaking to Parliament's Science, Innovation and Technology Committee last week. During the hearing, James Wood, head of veterinary medicine at Cambridge University, said CCHF could find its way to the UK "through our ticks at some point". |
