Anyone ever do videos in flash?
I just joined a site and all the videos in the members area are in flash format so the members can't download them and they load up fast.
The only thing that sucks is that you can't fast forward and rewind, but the movie is cut into clips so you can skip around. I bet this saves on bandwith too. Anyone have experience with this? I just think this is brilliant for keeping your content on your site and not floating around the net and wonder what you all thought of this. |
I was looking at this last week. Check out the quality on this video

If you usually convert your movies to .wmv format, then to get a flash video of the same quality (or close to it) the file size is going to be a LOT bigger. And if your members want to watch their favorite clip/movie again, they gotta pull it down from your site again rather than just finding it on their hard drive.
So it doesn't save on bandwidth. It is pretty effective however at combatting P2P - although the techie guys will get around it anyway. And one benefit of Flash is that it works on all operating systems (as long as folks have a browser from within the last 3 years or so). |
cool thanks

If you have Flash MX it now allows for direct import of external jp and also mov files, so yes...you can use a flash file and bring in mov movies now.
In the past we used a mov to swf converter (which you can find anywhere using goodle) and it would take each frame of a mov movie and convert it into single frame in an actual flash movie. This is great if you want real control over the movie (fast forward, rewind, stop, etc)...it just takes a lot more time to compile and template out, etc. We have been using video in flash for about a year and a half now in our video oriented games. We recently pulled them after getting a notice from that Arcacia company, but once that blows over we will be relreasing them again. Good luck...more and more flash is becoming the standard in online interactive content! Paul M. Games President Adult Web Games Straight, Gay, Hentai, Multiplayer and now French Version Games too! |
Ya, there's no way the file size will be smaller. Probably double the size of the original movie file.

bad idea. members are more fickle than ever, give them what they want - MPEG-1. Ask quiet how that works out for him :Graucho

Unless you have super-exclusive content you want to protect. it's
probably not worth the extra filesize. The average paysite subscriber would never go to the trouble to learn the procedure to capture .swf files. If someone was that ambitious they would already use hacks, cracks, and spoofs so that joining a paysite wouldn't be necessary. In my experience the filesize increases with a flash movie the same size and quality as original video input is flash movie=(.avi, mpeg4, etc.) x6(approx.) flash movie=(.mov, .wmv)x4(approx.) On the other hand...buttons (ff,rw,play, etc.) can be easily added using active scripting, and the playback is much more responsive than with windows based media players (IMHO). |
