"Domain registry of Canada" --- watch out for these scammers
Fellow Canukistanis and Canuckleheads..... beware. I know this has been mentioned elsewhere and on the news in past years, but I'm reminding everyone now..... if you get any "invoices" from Domain Registry of Canada, toss them in the shithole and burn them, then flush the ashes down the toilet... and remember to flush twice. I got 4 of them today. That's a lot of flushing.
They send you this official-looking invoice, it explains to you that your domian is about to expire in a few months, and they tell you that your existing registrar may lock your domains thus not allowing you to renew your lease on said domain. Buried somewhere in all that gibberish is the line "this is not an invoice"..... yea? then why the fuck does it look like one? Assholes. They give you prices on renewal which are far in excess of what you are probably paying now. I paid $70 USD for 5 years on most of my recent domain purchases, but these assclowns want $160 Cdn for 5 years. Whatever..... the point is that it looks like a bill, it talks like a bill, it acts like a bill........ but it isn't a bill. Don't fucking pay it. Thank you, have a nice day. |
Haven't they been sued by someone? I think so.
They send em out in these envelopes with the maple leaf on them, and try to make them look all official. I've gotten way too many of those fuckers. I wonder how many people have been fooled by them though? If you didn't know all that much about the internet and just had one website for your physical business you'd likely get fooled. |
i've gotten a couple trees worth of that shit in the mail.

I've gotten about 200 of those snail mails... even some phone calls.. They stopped calling when I said I was going to report their activfity to NetSol and the BBB. :)
Cheers, Matt |
Client of mine did fall for it. I tried then to move the domain back to DirectNic... Just couldn't till the shark lawyers got involved...
How can they keep theit merchant account??/ They must have chargebacks .... |
Where do you guys register your domains? I'm in Canada and I've owned domains for 8 years, and I've never seen one of those.
Thanks for the heads up CDSmith. |
I use directnic.
|
I register through GoDaddy. I've only received 1 though.

Industry Canada is looking in to it and it is definately illegal. I'm confident they will actually do something about it any decade now. |

Thanks for the reminder CD. I always get them and open em up for a laugh. Then, like you said, "toss them in the shithole and burn them, then flush the ashes down the toilet". I don't flush twice though. Waste of water. |

"Flush twice....... it's a long way to Dauphin" And... you don't want those things coming back on you. |
i got a shitload of those last year, one for every domain, but none this year but i just tossed em.
|
I've gotten two of those in the past month.
There was another company doing something similar where they were sending out invoices that looked exactly like what you would get from Bell Canada, for advertising your business in a bogus online yellow pages. I think they got in some serious trouble too. |
Yup got mine too. I thought WTF?. I just prepaid my domain names. Then I noticed up top this is not a invoice but purely a request to transfer your domain to us.
|
My bud just got the same letter in mail. Fuckers
