Previously known as hysteria, this involves actual disability, for example the loss or impairment of some motor or sensory function although there is no organic explanation.

Conversion symptoms vary from one person to another but the most common are blindness, deafness, paralysis and anaesthesia. These are involuntary responses which are not in the person's conscious control.'
