What's the difference between traffic and hits.

Can anyone tell me what this all means at the site below?

According to the stat page, traffic = number of uniques a site has and max hits are estimated hits send out to ONE gallery. Mostly it will be placed in the highest spot.

So if you are sending about 5k traffic to a site per day....what is usually the conversion rate? Amauter-reality based site question.
