Seriously, after the Net came along it wasn't as profitable. Most everyone in 900 started either cutting way back on advertising and just worked off the tons of ads already out theree or moved over to the Net completely.

In the exciting days of pay-per-call you could make 5 to 1 on your money monthly. It was unreal. A monkey with half a brain for marketing could make a killing.

Trends. Its all about new trends, new technologies and being the first to market with something brand new. Its not rocket science at all. Just being a good researcher and reading the news, industry magazines, and stuff like that.

I got into 976 numbers after I read a small article in Time magazine talking about Pacific Bell had new phone numbers where you would pay by the minute to listen to information.

The next day I was out buying equipment and developing ideas.
Grabbed some killer vanity names for the numbers so people would remember them, just like web domains now. And went out and started marketing my butt off.

You know as well as I do it takes money to make money.

It's still a viable industry. Just got way crowded and when the Net came along the national adult magazines lost their readers so it would take forever to get returns on your ad investments. Plus we had done every program idea imaginable and I got creatively burned out.

But we still have family investments in it. I just don't deal with it anymore personally. I love Net stuff and that's where I put my focus.

Everything we could think of. But you could only get a 3 to 6 month run on new ideas, because everyone would knock them off as soon as they were advertised.

We advertised on MTV quite a bit, and other TV networks to try and stay ahead of the competition as much as possible because most 900 guys weren't capitalized for TV advertising.

One of these days I'll digitize our craziest commercials and post them here. Our TV spots were funny cause we produced most of them ourselves to keep an amateur look that would make them stand out.

Who'd you work with KRL? I know many people who started in AT and came over to the internet, that were very successful in it, not just in sex lines. I also know one of the very few that are left, one of the big guys...

He's never had an affiliate program and never spammed anyone never had to. He can easily promote his own sites, stream his videos for these sites and earn all this money. While sitting at his computer and posting/reading threads on GFY. Which he does as "Entertainment"

first off, no one really knows how much he makes and who fucking gives a shit? his sites that i've seen are quality and stick out as much better than most movie sites out there. i would love to promote his sites. i don't think its too far fetched to think he clears 3 mil a year. but if he doesn't, who cares.

if he had an affiliate program i bet he could hire people to run it, make a good amount of money and spend less time working.

We worked directly with most of the regional Bells, AT&T, MCI, Sprint, a company down in South Africa with some of the 011, 809 and other little island numbers, ATN, NT, and a few other smaller ones out of New York and Philly.

We had our own equipment. The best company outside of when we didn't do our own SB, was ATN in Florida. They ran into some probs when the 900 biz started to go south and had some billing issues with the FTC, and some psychic line probs. Think they've bounced back now though. They moved into a gorgeous 50,000 sq. ft. bldg in South Florida now.

Well when the Net started up I knew it would be fantastic for Porn after coming out of the numbers we saw in audiotext. But I figured no way in hell will the DOJ not jump all over this wide open porn distribution. Taking the cautious route on the Net cause we had gone so hardcore in phone sex and been too visible was one of my early mistakes doing just softcore on the Net. I couldn't believe how in your face porn got and just kept thinking this can't last, no way, any month now, all these Larry FLyntt wannabees are going to be sitting in a jail cell, but hardcore distribution did stay legal and all the laws meant to stop or control it got thrown out in the SC for the most part.

Hardcore porn then reached critical mass and just proliferated like crazy and I realized nobody could stop it or effectively criminalize it and I said fuck the Playboy bikini crap we were doing that first year and migrated into the hardcore everyone else was publishing.

Looking back I wasted a year doing just the softcore bs.
