The attached file was a virus that Norton picked up....when the hell did Microsoft start sending viruses? That is their domain name. :eek7

KRL 05-18-2003 07:40 PM

That's going around. McAfee didn't pick it up. I got two like that today.

One said Movie from Microsoft and I thought it was a promo or something but didn't open it sensing something wasn't right after looking at the headers.

Geezuz isnt that kinda dangerous that one of the biggest software companies is sending out virus emails.....im sure allot of people well get fooled by this one just because its from Microsoft. You think they would have virus software installed when they make billions of dollars a year:Oh crap

Did you check the headers? Pretty sure microsoft didn't send it to you.

Lane 05-18-2003 07:57 PM

Oh noooooo!

I knew Microsoft was evil, but this is way too far! You should report them i think.

I also hate Jennifer Lopez, for sending me those e-mails telling me that I need a bigger cock.

FATPad 05-18-2003 08:00 PM

Oh man.

It's a good thing that email didn't say it was from Santa Claus.

Are you saying that wasn't really her sending those out? I guess I shouldn't have replied to her with my home address and pictures of my cock.

Well it sais it came from [email protected] so I dunno what the hecks going on....I didnt know someone could "spoof" a companies email address.

evildick 05-18-2003 08:03 PM

I could send you an email right now and make it appear to be from microsoft.

View the message source code to check out the headers. That will show you where it is coming from.

evildick 05-18-2003 08:05 PM

Right click on the message in your inbox, click "properties", then click on "details" to view the headers.

Don't check the email it came from, check the originating IP and run a traceroute on it. I got about 30 of them yesterday

Did you open it and run what they sent you?

Nah, its obviously not from Microsoft...
I got the e-mail too and the source is stripped pretty well, no ip or anything, no smtp relay servers either... just a reply address, but the message got nothing to do with Microsoft.

Do you trust return addresses on your snailmail to be impossible to forge? No, because the sender can write whatever they want on the envelope - noone is verifying it.

That's exactly how reliable the From field on an e-mail is - it is set by your mail client, and someone with the knowledge (which is trivially easy to find online...) can set it themselves.

NEVER EVER trust an e-mail that asks you to run a program attached to an e-mail or to send away passwords or other details, or log in to a site unless you know the site is legit. This has been used for lots of scams already.

If you think a warning like this might be real, then contact the company that the e-mail claims to be from via alternate (trusted) means, such as calling their offices, or going through their web site (if you know from OTHER sources than the e-mail what their web address is) to check if the matter is mentioned or to find a contact e-mail address.

JamesK 05-19-2003 06:13 AM

you guys call yourselves webmasters? damn.

Hansm 05-19-2003 06:14 AM

What version of mailwasher do you have?

I have 3.0 and it's screwed.

Sherman 05-19-2003 10:19 AM

anyone can make it look like they are from microsoft just by changing the reply email address in outlook to one that says something@microsoft.

dimonka 05-19-2003 10:19 AM

I didn't get one yet... ;)

Ron2k1 05-19-2003 10:26 AM

Even before outlook warned me this could be a virus, I allready decided to delete it...

LOL you are funny when you want to be :)

L_L 05-19-2003 10:47 AM

You know. I get about 4-6 e-mails like this everyday from different addresses with attachments like this.

I never open them and I have just been adding them to my block list. Only problem is I still have to receive them and then they go into my deleted folder.

Anybody have a solution for stopping these fucks?

Cindyff 05-19-2003 11:44 AM

The solutions that are most effective are
Filter your mail through http://www.spamcop.net $30 per year and they take action against spam and malicious virus attacks. Solution 2 Use a browser or e-mail account that supports filters so that you can filter out keywords etc. Solution 3 get a Mac .
Hope that's of use.
