get photoshop 7, and buy ( yes BUY - not STEAL) "Total Training For Adobe Photoshop 7" its a 7 CD collection that will teach you the "how-to's"

j/k ps6 came installed on my HP ... i dont even have a manual for it which sucks.

That image is completely possible to make using photoshop 7, a flood filter, some skew, distort, and roation, and a ton flares on a transparent layer. It does look like bryce, this is true, but photoshop makes some pretty good 3 dimensional stuff if you have the right plugins and some knowledge on traditional hand drawn 3D shapes.
