Given the choice of the following forums which would you chose?
 

I know forums aren't all that popular these days but I've
got a special (mainstream) project that I'm working on.

My main concern is to ease of being able to integrate
advertising as a way to monetize the new forum.

Here are my choices:

That would be my answer 10 years ago. Now I custom build everything from the ground up.

Tried phpbb and SMF as well, both sucked lol But I guess running a forum overall sucks if you dont have people to moderate it..

Why not the one like the new GFY is gonna be? Not sure of the name, but it's similar to GFY now but with more features... I really like it :)

old forum designs are hard to read and will be dead sooner or later (yea im looking at you gfy). bootstrap is a decade old for fucks sake.

This is somewhat true… A lot of open source BB's still use tables, but if serious about a project then it's not too hard to bring templates & designs up to date.

I think for mainstream, yes there are less and less forums, many closing, but for adult and niche that are still not fully adopted or even accepted on mainstream apps, then forums, that are active that is, will still be one of the best ways to gain relevant organic traffic.

Also, for something more modern you could try Discourse.

i grow my own. coding a forum is a 5 minute job these days.
