So far I have only read book #1. It was not a literary masterpiece, but it has a compelling story and good characters. I second this recommendation.

I also suggest:

The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Books 1-7 are some of the best I have ever read. Books 8 and 9 were not as good, but still worth reading.

Anything by Isaac Asimov or Robert Heinlein. Specifically, the Foundation series and Stranger in a Strange Land.

If you want to laugh NOTHING can beat a Dave Barry book. Dave Barry Is Not Making This Up and Dave Barry in Cyberspace are great places to start.

For books, read the original Dune series (NOT the prequels by Brian Herbert, but the FRANK Herbert books).

The Great and Secret Show by Clive Barker is also a masterpiece.

Books. for light very entertaining series I suggest 'discworld' novels by Terry Pratchett. Good reading. They're not masterpieces, but if you're sick or it's a rainy day they're excellent reading . :)

oh, and if you choose to read them, start from the first novel.. they're kinda linked.
