Best Guitarist in the world = John Williams.

chodadog 05-14-2003 09:37 PM

But you've gotta love that guy's mullet. =\

didn't say "best"... i said fast... and it sounded perfect.. hit every note. "Fast" isn't always best, but its still very very impressive. but i wouldn't doubt it if he'd be rated up there as the best. definately the fastest.

bullshit, Flash Gordon is faster

fantasyman 05-14-2003 09:51 PM

Fastest guitar player was Alvin Lee from Ten Years After - this is a comment Jimi Hendrix made in 1969 and I believed him then and now :)

Sassyass 05-14-2003 09:53 PM

mullet....
heh

The rare Metalutt,, often found in small biker bars, reminiscing of the old days, picking up over weight ladies wearing mini skirts. Can be found wearing a cut off Iron Maiden shirt, tight pants, sometimes spandex, and usually has long dangly earrings in both ears.
Very dangerous to approach, only professional mullet hunters should attempt to photograph this species.

thats so metal, god bless you. I saw that shit advertised here a week ago and I knew I should have went. It was at a total dive and was billed as some 80s speed metal god, used the same exact pic you posted in the advertisement. I will forever regret not going to that now.

I even skipped Yngwie Malmsteen, I regret that one as well.

Yikes.

Go download some Al Dimeola or John McLaughlin... or if you like metal Morbid Angel or Cannibal Corpse.

Glam metal relics are cool and all, but you may want to educate yourself here on speed AND quality before making such claims.

faster but never as technical.

SykkBoy 05-14-2003 11:34 PM

Cryptic Slaughter - Lowlife

Nitro - Freight Train
(all about the final guitar solo)

Extreme Aggression is one of the greatest albums of all time.

I am on my 5th beer and my 3rd listen of the entire Too Fast For Love album. Not that it even remotely relates to 80 speed metal, it rules none the less. RULES

He's fast, no doubt, but a lot of that "speed for the sake of speed" playing really sounds like crap. About 1/2 of that song kicked a fair amount of ass and 1/2 I could do without.

While fast can be cool, quality is king. My list:

Roy Buchannon
Jimi Hendrix
Toy Caldwell
Ry Cooder
Gary Hoey
Ralph Macchio (Ha! Just kidding. I'm sure some of you got that one.)

Some more good ones (just not my personal favorites):
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Stevie Ray Vaughan

speed/thrash metal was never about mullets. dont get me wrong, I love mullets as much as the next guy. But us thrash and speed metal kids were never mullet types. We are the forefathers of black and death metal... no mullets.

mullets were in the guns and roses, ac dc type metal crowd.

what Ralph didn't really play his own shite in that movie?? ;)))

there are some amazingly fast guitar players in bluegrass and rockabilly too...

I went and saw Brian Setzer a couple months ago and he can play fast as hell....his solos were amazing...I almost left a wet spot in the chair.....

Tell me. I used to work for Slash doing cartage and merch. When the crew was feeling like treating the band like shit (which was all the time) the favorite razz was "you made a lot of mullets VERY happy tonight!" cuz metal shows are FUCKING SAUSAGE FESTS!!

At least the girls that do show up are crazed sluts.:)

true. dont get into metal for the women.

there are some hot girls in metal. some beautiful girls into black metal. hair metal attracts stripper types.

each kind of metal has its own type of woman.

but still, dont get into hardcore or metalcore for the women thats for sure. well thats not true, alot of them have that betty page zelda style going on.

rockabilly probably got the best looking woman.

chuk 05-15-2003 12:34 AM

I've been playing guitar for 11 years, and have never once thought 'hey, I wanna go watch some 80's speed guy.'

I started out learning old Metallica and shit like that, and quickly learned that the slower you play the more emotion is in the music. Adam Jones from Tool is a prime example. The music doesn't even need vocals to convey the feeling.

Heh, come to think of it, Ry Cooder (who is also n my list) played some of Ralph's stuff in that movie. Ry is also blazing, blazing, blazing fast on the banjo. Ry and Toy Caldwell are both rockabilly/folk/bluegrass artists and they can both hold their own with and even surpass many of the rock legends.

I'm not really familiar with Brian Setzer's guitar prowess but I assume a wet spot means he was good :)

:1orglaugh My 14 year old son just dyed his hair black explaining to me it pulls the goth and black metal girls.

My brother works for Poison. Hair metal definately attracts strippers. Unfortunately they are all 35 year old strippers. :(

heh, actually thats not what i thought to myself...

it was being advertised over the radio that the fastest guitar player in the world is playing at a local guitar shop, so of fucking course i'd go, if you didn't and u've played guitar for a long time you'd be stupid not to, cause it was also advertised as a clinic, learned a lot from it as well...

i also grew up listening / learning metallica... they're my fav. band. i think for the most part you're right about the slower songs are more emotional... but, i think if there were a song with a melodic background with a very fast solo'ist performing, with the right scales and such, it could accomplish the same effect.
