Any Vacares users from NL using KPN?
Our download speed has an average of 50kb/s which is dial-up modem speed.
I want to compare your KPN tracert if you have it. |
Or, if you're in NL and use KPN and a US located host but no Vacares, pls post your tracert. Here's mine

When I download my file in Firefox with a HOXX VPN it is ~1.4mb/s, FTP is ~40-60kb/s. |
That would seem to indicate a peering problem between KPN and Hurricane Electric. These things happen, perhaps check your throughputs again at different times of the day. I'm sure Ryan can investigate with his upstream networks.

KPN seems to have (2 year old) problems with their route with the US, at least I have seen others complain on their business forum. They're the biggest ISP here so a couple complainers won't make them change anything :-). I was trying to get some more data. Sidenote question because of my lack of server knowledge and curiosity: how come using a simple VPN Firefox / Chrome extension speeds things up? Wouldn't that also need to travel the same path of the ISP? I'm intrigued :-) |

The only sound advice you could be given here is to move to a host that uses something better than Hurricane Electric for EU users. It's even worse than Cogent for EU, as it's always congested. Put simply, it's at the bottom of the barrel: cheapest bandwidth.
They should either whip out their wallet and upgrade to more different carriers (or just get Century Link / Level(3)) and route the traffic accordingly. Or, you should move elsewhere; to the likes of OVH or LeaseWeb -- where you could make full use out of your KPN connection. |
