Moving to Chicago...

Anyone up there give me information about cool things to do and what to see and such? We are scheduled to move the last of August.

Hubby's mother's wife's mom (READ: Gramma-in-law) is in need of someone to help with daily stuff like shopping, laundry, housecleaning so that she doesn't have to be put into a nursing home. In exchange, his mom & wife are buying us a little house in Brookfield (where Gramma lives).

We are transferring colleges and things, but what's cool to do in Chicago?

I don't live there, but everytime I visit, I find plenty of entertainment. :-)

I went to chicago not long ago and had the best time. Great nightlife. We went out for Italian food everynight and the food was phenominal everywhere we ate.

clubs: Excalibur, Crowbar and Shelter (from what I hear)

Hey, Tala...

Chicago brings you closer to home now.....:)

Bet you're glad to be leaving where you are...aren't you? :)

ronin 05-13-2003 01:33 PM

will you be in the city or burbs??

Sly_RJ 05-13-2003 01:34 PM

Chicago is one of my absolute favorite cities, hands down.

Are you looking to do tourist type things? What are your interests? There's soo much to see and do. I haven't been to the Aquarium in years, but it was always fun. They had a nice little dolphin show. It's actually the largest Aquarium in the States.

Brookfield is great too, awesome zoo.

chicago is a blast hit me up on icq 14420613 if you want some fun clubs to go to.

Hit the club Kingston Mines, on Halstead Ave. Best blues club in the country. Shaw's Blue crab lounge is the place for good seafood.

The museum of Science and Industry is world reknown. Chicago is filled with hopping night life. Lincoln Park is a hotspot at night too.

You have NO idea, hon. *hugs*

I'll be coming Home for a visit July 31-August 7 to see Queensryche/Dream Theater and hug some old friends. Drop me an email and I'll get your # to say Hi to you while I'm there!

ronin: Brookfield. The 'burbs.

Sly: I'll be doing tourist shit first, but eventually I want to find a favortie nightclub and stuff. Restaurants with good Chinese, Italian, and Mexican dishes are high on the list...Aquarium is good, museums.. (youseeums?)..I'll have to find my new college, too, dammit. Bah.

....does this mean that I have to become a Cubs fan? :(

Chicago is the best city in the world. Its very compact so you can be anywhere in the city for less than $10 in cab.

The food is the best... you will not find better food anywhere. (New York comes close)

Everyone is very friendly and its the least pretentious city you will find. You are coming at a great time... summer in chicago is absolutely awesome. Miles and miles of lakeshore.

Chicago is also one of the cleanest cities there is. Our mayor is the Best... he doesnt fuck around. I remember him saying that if the Anti-war protestors disrupted the city in anyone he would sue the organizers.

Many great theatres, museums, and entertainement... and very low crime.

If you are planning on bars, clubs... stick to the north side. Most places in the city are big suburban hangouts/tourist traps.

Best of luck when you get here:thumbsup

Sweet Home Chicago! There are just soooo many things to do here. Stick to the NorthSide for entertainment take a cab to Wrigleyville that's Addison/Clark and you will find a wealth of nightclubs trying to outdo each other. Same thing repeats Downtown but more upscale and not as accessible, unless you live there of course.

Someone else said it, but let me repeat: Chicago has the best food in the world. Any ethnicity in the world you will find here and they brought their culinary wealth with them. Sounds yummy? Get ready to add some pounds!

But you can shake those pounds off along the lakeshore. Pretty much the entire shoreline is one huge park stretching from the south to the north and trough the norhern suburbs. If you want a little bit of driving treat start driving north on the Lake Shore Drive (LSD) continue north along Sheridan and keep driving north trough the suburbs to see some awesome houses, villas and palaces really of the Chicago powerful and well-connected. It's a nice ride.

Anway get me on icq if you want a list of my favorite restaurants. I like the usual stuff but also cruise along Devon avenue for Pakistani and Middle Eastern foodstuffs. Dodge the burkas and the Jihadis walking along, this street will scare most country folks silly. But the food is good if you can find a place that doesn't give you the 'infidel treatment'. Pakistanis here tend to be quite radical despite their close location to Indians and Hassidic Jews all along this same street. Go figure.

Chicago is a world class city, I've travelled a bit and I haven't seen a place where the people can live in what seems like segregated neighborhoods yet overall there is pretty good racial and ethnic harmony in the city.
