Do You Like Black Licorice? Don’t Overdo It ..

It doesn’t say what size the bag was but it wasn’t a Halloween bag I’d bet

“A Massachusetts man died last year from eating an excessive amount of black licorice, doctors said Wednesday.

The unusual case was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, detailing how the man consumed a bag and a half of the candy every day for two weeks prior to his death.

Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid, which could deplete potassium levels and contribute to heart rhythm problems, doctors explained.

“Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The man had collapsed inside a fast food restaurant and died the next day. Doctors discovered he had dangerously low potassium, which led to heart rhythm and other problems.

The Food and Drug Administration warns that eating only 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could lead to an irregular heartbeat.

Jeff Beckman, a spokesman for the Hershey Company, which makes the popular Twizzlers licorice twists, told the Associated Press that “all of our products are safe to eat and formulated in full compliance with FDA regulations.”

Beckman added that all candy “should be enjoyed in moderation.”

21 bags of black licorice must have cost him a bit. In the end, it cost him everything.

Too much of anything is bad but I never knew how licorice could affect you.

He died last year. Plus his potassium level proved it.

I love black licorice... Yum. They are addicting but... 21 bags?

JustBiz 09-26-2020 09:05 AM

Reminds me of sicking pernod when there was no more Smirnoff left. Never touched licorice again.

k0nr4d 09-27-2020 02:50 AM

licorice is fucking disgusting, no idea how anyone can eat it. Also raisins.

abshard 09-27-2020 06:20 AM

Black stuff is gross, spit it out when I tried it. Red ones are okay.

CLSC 09-27-2020 06:31 AM

Havent had black licorice in years but I fuck with sambuca heavy

CLSC 09-27-2020 06:32 AM

Also, look at those details. Bag and a half a day, died in a fast food joint. That glutton was a fatty

It's amazing how many everyday foods can be toxic if overdone. Too many dark green veggies can cause overload of Vitamin K and potassium leading to blood clotting and heart rhythm problems. Brazil nuts can cause selenium overdose. Tonic water (quinine) can cause heart palpitations. All rice contains high levels of arsenic and should be heavily rinsed and eaten in moderation. Cherry and apple seeds contain cyanide. Zucchini contains a toxic substance called cucurbitacin. Lots more . . .

I like Licorice, but I try to stay away from any sweets, or at least try to minimize the amount of sweets I eat.

Can't eat it. Just very weird taste. But many people I know I truly fans. I think there are only two categories of people - who like it or who hate it, nothing in between
