That's the dumbest idea yet. We just revamped our currency.

Plus I don't want to buy 31 new bill accepters. :feels-hot

detacided 05-12-2003 01:11 PM

If this is some far-strung attempt at jumpstarting the ecconomy I think some Senator needs to have his car blown up. What a bad idea. Add complexity to something simple. The rule of America.

a420 05-12-2003 01:35 PM

like its so complex.

Why don't we just use monopoly money instaid. It would save them printing cost

I saw a special on Discovery Channel and they were saying all of the new safeguards they put in the money when they re-designed it are not working. That is why they are redoing it again. Very high end copy machines are able to copy money really well. They are working with Hewlett Packard to make money that will not work on copy machines.

Even if they put something in the copy machines that detected is was money and told it not to copy it. I am sure some hackers would figure out a way around that.

The design of U.S. currency makes it relatively easy to counterfeit. Additionally, since all the denominations are the same size and use the same colors, many people are bleaching 1-Dollar bills, and printing 20s and 100s on the paper.

Let's hope the new design is more attractive than the 1996 versions.

they must think if they have pretty colors like canadian money then they won't lose as much value to our currency.

Mishi 05-12-2003 03:24 PM

They're only changing $20s, $50s and $100s? I'll NEVER see the new money! :waaaaahh

gothweb 05-12-2003 03:34 PM

The US dollar gets used as a second (hell, even a first) currency in many countries. This means it is much more heavily counterfeited-- something made easier by the simple design.

FlyingIguana 05-12-2003 04:03 PM

i wanna know if my lil counterfeit detection pen will still work on this new monopoly money?

WiredGuy 05-12-2003 04:12 PM

Is it just me or does this stat seem particularly high:

"The Secret Service says the percentage of counterfeit bills produced digitally has grown from 1 percent of bogus bills in 1995 -- before the last redesign -- to a whopping 40 percent in 2002."

And based on the article, it doesn't seem the new bills will fix the problem(s).

You guys ever see the twin tower trick with the US twenty? You fold it a certain way and you can see the twin towers with smoke coming out exactly where the planes crashed....really freaky....also you fold it another way and you can see the pentigon with smoke comming out of it......Very trippy stuff considering the bill was made before 9/11

Not to mention all those public transit agencies :). IIRC, it took two years before some public transit systems accepted the "newer" dollar bills.

The redesign still doesn't address my biggest complaint about American currency--it's way too difficult to tell them apart in the dark. Makes them a bit difficult to use at gentlemens' clubs :) .

Dax 05-13-2003 09:19 AM

The key word there is DIGITALLY ;) They did not mean total circulation. :)

Hahaha exactly...

Especially if your visiting from Canada where all our money has been different colors for years (insert monopoly $$ joke here) in the dark the US bills look very similar to me.

Is it a 5$ or 50$ a few times in Vegas I've almost tipped way more than I expected too...

They might not have too depending on who makes em

The color in the new bills won't be a problem for the bill-acceptor machines his company makes, he said, but certain aspects of the bills' new appearance will require adjustments.
