my power supply is dying

yeah, it's making a fucking weird buzzing sound... like the fan is fucking up, is it still ok to use my comp or will it fuck up something else if the power supply just dies?
I gotta go change it... but like next week

RedShoe 05-12-2003 10:30 AM

Next week?!?

Are you high? Shut it down, and go switch it right the fuck now. What's the matter with you?

FlyingIguana 05-12-2003 10:31 AM

turn the pc off and get it replaced before turning it on again.

when the power supply goes, it always takes something with it. motherboard, hard drive or something. maybe both.

It's the bearings in your fan wearing out. I would go to a computer store and get a new fan (bring the old one in) costs maybe $5 or something. Your powersupply is fine, if the fan stops turning it may not be. I have had a few fans in my powersupplies go. The sound of a shot fan drives you nuts...I used to jam a knife in the back of it in a fit of rage.

I had a fan seize in one of my servers once, although at the time I didn't know it. Server dies, so I go in to see why. (has to happen at 2am, of course). The whole place is filled with the smell of burnt electronics, and I find the power supply blown up. I got to it at least 30 minutes after it went off the air, and the internal case frame was still almost too hot to touch...

thats usually what happens. the noise goes away and you're like, wtf was that? then poof, you smell something burning and your pc doesn't work. then its time to find out what just got torched.

well make sure it was the fan and not the power supply itself

It's not that easy changing the fan on a powersupply, at least not on mine.
