My first night without alcohol...

...in a long time. And its making me dead nervous...im drinking glass after glass of lemonade and smoking cigarettes like crazy.

It will prolly take forever to fall a sleep.

Somebody pass me some sleeping pills.

Dirty F 05-11-2003 07:10 PM

Dirty F 05-11-2003 07:11 PM

I feel good, sleep enough and eat well...so i dont directly see a problem but people keep on telling me its bad bad bad.

I dunno, ....i know some people who've done it for years & never had a problem....if you can handle it physically & mentally then more power to ya bro!

But your liver might beg to differ after a decade or 2... hehe

Problem is that the symptoms of the worst alcohol related health problems don't show up until its too late.

For example.. by the time you have enough symptoms of liver dysfunction to make you see a Doctor, you've most likely got severe and irreversible damage. You can have alcohol induced high blood pressure for a long time and never feel it, then one day.. bam.. heart attack, stroke, or kidney faliure.

No idea how much you drink or what sort of health you're in, but the "I feel fine now so I'll always feel fine" line of reasoning is a bad one to bet your health on.

p00p 05-11-2003 07:28 PM

I have 18 of these I am about to get into.....

My liver is kicking me as we speak. I remember a time a couple of years ago I had to pretend i was sick so I could stay home and wash clothes and pay bills.

We were drinking 7 days a week and that was after putting in 12 hours or better at the day job.

Still do it every once in a while but not night after night.

I still like going out but the days of getting home at 6:45 and getting to work at 7:30 are over for me for the most part.

galleryseek 05-11-2003 07:34 PM

well, its all about your principles... when it comes to health, luckily i was able to stray away from any addictions like smoking / drinking / drugs of any sort... gone the opposite route and i'm a lifting freak (hah, sometimes the effects of going too far w/ that can be unhealthy though)

but... lifes about bein happy... liftin makes me happy... if drinkin makes a person, genuinely happy, then so be it... but they better be ready to handle and accept the consequences.

anything exaggerated to an extent will yield risks... with lifting, those risks might be doing too much weight and hurting yourself, or doing steroids and end up pumping something OTHER than a steroid into urself...

so, all in all... if you're fine with the possibility of a damaged liver, or whatever, then kickass, do what it takes to make ya happy, but realistically most people are not, i know i wouldn't be... so thats why i don't do it.

psy 05-11-2003 07:37 PM

Hey man just hang in there things will get better :) . I suggest finding something that will occipy your time that you used to set aside for drinking. For example if your married or have a girl friend start doing more each night together. Or join a program such as AA alcoholic's anonymous. Seriously man, anything that you enjoy doing, something like a hobby, use that and occipy your time.
Find some people to hang out with on the weekends. If you hang around your drinking buddys you'll fall back into the same patterns.

anyway man if you need someone to talk to you can icq me

Thanks alot, altho i know what you mean i dont think im that far that i have to go to see AA.

As for a hobby, being a webmaster was a hobby and since 2 years my job so im happy i can combine that. Altho i should stick more energy in it instead of going out. On the other side, im young, i like going out and i can afford it, so i dont see a reason not to do it.

Cheers.

I hate to be the one bringing this to you bud but if you get
nervous of 1 night without alcohol and can't wait till tomorrow so
you can drink again, worry about not being able to sleep then you
SHOULD REALLY ask yourself if it's not time to seek some help.

Far as I'm concerned, drinking is not a problem so long as it doesn't negatively impact the rest of your life. Once it does, though, it's time to do something about it.

Try to answer the 20 questions about drinking that will tell you if you don't have the information to get a full knowledge of your condition. If you answer more than 3 "yes" then you are probably an alcoholic. Don't worry though, you don't have to quit drinking forever, just till you go to sleep tonight. Yesterday is history, and tomorrow's a mystery - just try to stay in the moment. Write to me if you have any questions about this, no need to talk about such a touchy subject on a public forum. Normal people don't wonder if they are alcoholics or not.

Normal drinkers are not defensive about thier drinking.

Denial is a serious issue with some people. Battuski... if you're drinking every day, I mean every single day.... you've got a problem dude. Even in my heaviest partying days I can't remember any time when I could say I drank every day, except for my Acapulco trips. 2 weeks of ...... I can't remember.

The blood pressure thing was from personal experience btw. A month or two ago I'd been drinking 1 to 1 1/2 bottles of wine a day for quite a few months. Ended up in the emergency room one night and they checked my bp, it was 180/98. Not good. They gave me drugs to lower it and kept me overnight.

After three weeks of complete abstention it was down to 125/80. Now I drink 1 or 2 nights a week, and I'm fine. 1 or 2 nights vs. 5 or 6 nights can make a huge difference.

This guy just said he was having a hard time getting through the night without alcohol, staying awake during sex, and getting a fuckin erection. I have two areas to consider for each queation.... what I did during my 20's and early 30's, and what I do now. My answers hold true for both though....

I'm just not one to be addictive about much. I've never liked the idea of "needing" something constantly, like smoking or gambling or drinking. I like to drink, yes..... I've always liked having some secret drinks hidden in a cooler at the beach.... nothing like a cold one on the beach on a hot day, and being able to invite a few babes to come join in. Or a barbecue.... how can anyone have a barbecue and not have a beer? I mean really. It's just something I like, but if it's not there I won't go mental and start shaking and sweating like some people do.

When it came to work, well work was work. I worked at a hospital for 15 years looking after patients, there was no room for booze. I did know some though, nurses, health care aids etc that drank during their breaks, always got drunk after work etc. I never understood those types. If you start obsessing about anything like booze or gambling or drugs etc, you're going to regret it every time. I would rather enjoy something in moderation than obsessing about it. Don't obsess... enjoy.

I'm aware that fervent AA'ers tend to respond with near hysteria to people who counsel those they define as "alcoholics" to moderation instead of abstention, but that is not at all what I was doing.

If he's sucking down a sixpack and some vodka shots every single day, well okay, you tell ME when the problems start?

Think about it... it's monday night, nothing much is happening,... and you're off to the bar to drink, maybe shoot some stick. Tuesday rolls around, and again,.... you're out sucking down the cold ones.
Wednesday.... yup (burp)
Thursday .... other people are actually starting to go out by now, to get the jump on the weekend. You can "blend in" on thursday.
Friday.... I bet you have more than just a "few beers and a couple shots" bro. Friday's usually get the drinking level wound up higher.
Saturday.... much like Friday's, drink drunk drop.
Sunday too? ... oh my.... yes, sunday afternoon on a deck.... gotta do it.

My point was every day..... a glass of wine with dinner isn't the same as this at all.

Don't mistake what I'm saying as my drinking ability not being up to par. My buddies and I used to go into pre-flight-training in December.... on the nights we WOULD go out we'd play drinking games, have draft-races, and a steady flow of tequila shots. My fastest time for downing two standard glasses of draft was 2.7 seconds..... it wasn't beaten very often. The night when I drank the most ever was a few weeks after my Mexico trip in '94, when I put away 27 shots of tequila along with steady beers over the course of the evening, about 18-20 beers in all.

I just never drank every single day. Ever.

When it comes time to relax and party, like the first weekend up at the cabin for example, I can drink with the best of them AND the worst of them. But I don't make my life be all about drinking. That's where a lot of people fuck up.

beemk 05-11-2003 09:35 PM

i havent drank in about 3 months.
