Pete Townshend

So, Pete Townshend is cleared of not having any cp in his possesion but because he visited a website he is put on the sex offender list for 5 years..now he said he was looking into it for research purposes...But what I want to know is how do they gauge who to put on this list? If you happen to hit a tgp/freesite etc. that had cp on it are you in shit because you accessed it for 1 min, 5 min? If they go through your computer...how long can they tell you were on a site?..if it came up as a popup it will still show being accessed in the computers history...I wonder how they track this? Or is it by ip address..going through cp site? The main reason I am wondering this is because these people that keep coming on this board saying "Found this (cp link) what should I do with it, should I report it? They have all accessed that cp site..so is that not the same thing?

Here's the article....

Pete Townshend cleared of child porn charges
Thursday May 8, 2003

Pete Townshend, guitarist and co-founder of The Who, was cleared of charges of possessing child pornography earlier this week.

London's Metropolitan police announced that Townshend "was not in possession of any downloaded child abuse images," but because he visited a web site in 1999 that contained such material, he was placed on a national register of sex offenders for the next five years.

In a statement, Townshend admitted that he was wrong to access such a web site, however he was doing research for his autobiography. He maintained that he has campaigned against child pornography in the past and had no "nefarious purpose" in visiting the questionable web site.

"As I made clear at the outset, I accessed the site because of my concerns at the shocking material readily available in the Internet to children as well as adults, and as part of my research toward the campaign I had been putting together since 1995 to counter damage done by all kinds of pornography on the Internet, but especially any involving child abuse."

I fucking hate journalists. I remember a few days before this whole Townsend thing blew up, one newspaper in particular was boasting (they ran a full page advertisement) about how they were going to "expose" a "world famous A-list rock star" as being a "vile sickening pervert" and "disgusting dangerous monster"... apparently he was "a frontman for one of the biggest and best liked rock groups of all time" and had "made multiple television appearances and starred in several big budget smash hit movies"... I was left thinking, what? A fucking cross between Brad Pitt and Ozzy Osbourne?

and for Petey, it isn't research if you're jerking off over it. :321GFY

I thought the way they are catching people is because they used their credit card on a CP paysite?

I think they'll get people any way they can. Capturing "pedophiles" (even if the people are not) is a first class way of getting headlines, with the benefit that any public figure who speaks out against them will be seen as promoting CP. It's a win-win situation for the prosecutors.

Under UK law, viewing CP online is the same as downloading it (no legal time limit as far as I'm aware), also bizarrely it counts as making it, and I believe distributing it.

There may be some leeway involved if you receive e-mail spam, or it appears involuntarily in pop ups etc... You wouldn't be in a particularly good postion if you didn't report it at the time though.

Still prosecuting thought crimes is complex even in this police state, too much history of personal liberty, fortunately if the cops don't get you, the friendly bounty killers who work for the British Media will cheerfully assasinate your character at no extra cost.
