Whats up with Candid??

Ok I ordered one of their hosting packages online, and today they send me an email with a bunch of forms to fill out and fax, which is way more of a hassle then any other hosting company I have worked with. Anyways I found this form very odd, I have to trace my credit card now? What the fuck......Would you like my finger prints too candid? :eek7

Am I missing something here, is this normal? I just want some hostng, I dont wanna do all this crap.

LiveDose 05-07-2003 03:35 PM

You're lucky, they removed the urine sample...:)

Why 05-07-2003 03:37 PM

id take a picture of my penis and stick it in there, and tell them to fucking suck it.

they dont need all that BS. tell them to fuck OFF. i sure as hell would NOT jump through hoops for a hosting company.

Penrod 05-07-2003 03:39 PM

We also need a retina scan.

Ya thats what I thought.....ive used many hosting companies before and none were this invasive.....why would they need a copy of my credit card and picture id, So now I have to prove im not a criminal just to pay them.....No thanks.

MrPanama 05-07-2003 03:42 PM

Plus I dont have a scanner or fax machine....so even if I wanted to jump through the hoops I couldn't......I guess they lost some Bussiness.

detoxed 05-07-2003 03:43 PM

That form is simply for your protection. We get 0% fraud with that form. Our bank requires a signature and copy of the card.
You would be amazed how many online signups that come in that are fraudulent...

Fraudulent? But wouldnt a simple processing of the credit card prove that it is in fact real, and all the address and everything match up with what im saying. Im just trying to buy a $45/month hosting package, Not a Hummer.

With a credit card imprint and a signature, good luck charging back. I thought he explained it pretty clearly.

When you're charging your (big) clients big dough, I'd want to have that protection as well.

Juicy D. Links 05-07-2003 03:59 PM

yOU THINK THATA BAD? I HAD TO FEDEX MY SPERM SAMPLE TO THEM.

Fraud is a much bigger problem than most would assume.

CaroMark 05-07-2003 04:47 PM

Hello MrPanama,

If you had contacted me and I could have cleared this all up for you but detoxed has it right

The CC authorization is really there for both you and us to help keep costs down associated with fraudulent charge backs. To give you an idea we have a "0" charge back rate where we have a signed authorization in place, which I am sure you can understand keeps the processor's prices down.

Well I do hope this puts your mind at ease. :thumbsup

its only a benefit to the host. Giving someone free reign of your credit card never leads to good situations.

True, especially in the hosting business.

Have you tried banning certain IP ranges? I believe WHT has an old but good thread on a list of banned IPs.

Brad Mitchell 05-07-2003 07:18 PM

It's good business practice! I've not yet ever had a hosting chargeback but I have heard of some horror stories. It seems to me that the right forms would definitely get rid of the garbage. Candid has good low pricing and protecting themselves against another unnecessary espense only makes sense. You have to remember that for as many good honest webmasters as there are there are also a percentage of bastards that switch hosts frequently, don't pay their bills, etc.

Luck to everyone!

Brad

Local online computer shop said they will next day anything you order so long as they get to keep an imprint of your card on file w/signature.

Off the record my boy said they can basically charge anything they want to the card and you can't do anything about it.

KRL 05-07-2003 09:50 PM

What you have to worry about are unscroupulous employees at companies that have this kind of info on file. With your DL and CC someone sneaking in the files can whack your identity and become you very easily.

As long as they have good security in place yeh odds are things like that won't happen. However very few companies practice safe storage of customer info.

There was an investigation here in Florida a couple years back where the news reporters were going around and collecting trash from outside banks to see how securly they were shredding financial documents.

It was frightening. In one dumpster, they found tons of copies of loan applications with everything from a to z about the applicants tossed away without having been shredded at all. In another dumpster were reems of computer printouts of customer account reports, showing SSN's and account balances for each person.
