Alexa toolbar bugs? (important to traffic traders)

I just installed Alexa toolbar, which now has popup blocking, and I noticed that it incorrectly determined my target=_blank traffic trading links as popups!!!

Furthermore, I allowed the popup and my site was listed in the "Always allow popups from these sites:" list, so it was no accident on my part. Only after I clicked to allow the popup did my trade partner's site load up. I tried to duplicate it on my other sites and I could, but only half of the time. I removed my original site from the list and I could not duplicate it again, so this 'bug' is very sporadic.

For those of you with Alexa toolbar and who trade traffic, can you enable Alexa's Popup Manager (is it enabled by default?) and test this on your sites? Let me know if it is just me. Lots of users may be labelling my sites as popup sites incorrectly. Sad if this is true. Thanks.

I have been trying to duplicate this, but it only seems to happen when I let my webpage stay open for a long period of time and them come back to it. I will let you know as I figure out more concrete evidence.

Godspeed my friend! :thumbsup

jact 05-08-2003 05:25 AM

I don't think many people run Alexa's Toolbar?! (What the hell is Alexa's toolbar?!)

foe 05-08-2003 05:57 AM

I bet you very little people here run the alexa toolbar

I reckon there's a pretty substantial amount of webmasters using the Alexa toolbar. And obviously, quite a few surfers too.

I posted a link to it in my first post: http://download.alexa.com/. It's similar to Google's toolbar, only it tracks where surfers go and creates a top list from it. Right now I can see that GFY is the 1,232nd most visited site on the Internet (according to the toolbar which is known to be biased towards the companies associated with it and many other things. One example is that only certain types of surfers will ever install a third party toolbar. Another example is if you are the sole visitor to your homepage, and you have an Alexa toolbar installed, then you are representing more than just one Internet surfer; you are representing the amount of Alexa toolbar users divided by the amount of surfers on the net. This means your hompage will be ranked higher than normal. This is why the rankings are only accurate for sites ranked 100,000th and below, due to greater volume of traffic and thus greater accurate of ranking.)

I have to disagree. Some very very very small sites have traffic ranks from that toolbar, which means there's a lot of users using it.

I have determined that it is definitely time-related. If I leave any website open for 10 to 15 minutes, Alexa toolbar thinks any target=_blank link is a popup. This will occur even if you refresh the site. You must close the site down and reload it in a new browser window for this bug to leave. Can ANYONE ELSE confirm this on their end?

If its time related it seems like its a bug to me. Very strange

You do not use target=_blank links or what???

HQ 05-09-2003 10:26 AM

I believe we all deal with 'new windowed' traffic on this forum in one way or another. How come nobody gives a fuck about Alexa's toolbar blocking YOUR traffic?

http://pages.alexa.com/prod_serv/quicktour_new.html states:
With over 10 million downloads, the Alexa toolbar is a sure winner.

I am sure that this value is somewhat accurate.

Haha, you are the guy that wrote this.

"realizes that there's a lot of potential in them. thanks for that.

not all of us make money via tgp posting. and even if, there's no need to bash. the tgp'ers are the ones the free hosts need to get big. (lost your name), do you run a free host?

i don't know if it's possible to become big (as in millionaire) all on your own in this industry, without some connection to the small guys.

stocktrader23, first of all, that is something I wrote TWO YEARS ago. The section of my post that you posted is cut-off and the entire post is out of context in this thread so it makes NO SENSE here. I highly doubt anyone is going to go back and figure out the point you are trying to make...

(BTW, I still agree with my post, after looking back and researching what it was I was getting at.)

...so what is your point?

Juge 05-17-2003 09:19 AM

I have the alexa toolbar installed now, and it occasionally thinks ANY link that has "_blank" as the target is a pop-up. How fucking stupid can the program be? If you do not use the 'x' button to close its dialog that pops up, you must either choose to accept all pop-ups from the domain forever, or close all pop-ups from the domain forever (and I bet it will occasionally still believe the target="_blank" are pop-ups when it is closing these). Of course, you can go into options and remove domains from either list, but WTF kind of drugs is this toolbar on? 10 million people using it (er, 10 million downloads, I mean), and it has bugs like this, enabled by default? wow...

GrimShawn 05-17-2003 09:23 AM

Damn that Alexa toolbar *shakes fist*

HQ 05-18-2003 08:45 PM

I can't believe that nobody gives a fuck about this. It is almost like Kazaa Lite blocking traffic, but even worse:
