I wouldn't say better, but I absolutely love the Hallowed Be Thy Name cover by Cradle of Filth.

sarettah 08-05-2019 08:33 AM

On this one, I can't really say the cover is better than the original but it is at least as good while being different. :thumbsup

Apparently, I don't know how to embed .... here's the link anyway:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYKLvYGqaC0

You could also add Hurt by Johnny Cash (cover of Nine Inch Nails), so many others but those two were the first I thought of.

Sly 08-05-2019 08:34 AM

Metallica has a great cover album, Garage Inc.

The Wait, The Prince, Breadfan, etc.

Replace curly braces ({}) with square brackets ([]) and only use the video id at the end of the url instead of the entire url. :thumbsup

How did I forget that one!

I have shown that video to many, many people. Love it.

MaDalton 08-05-2019 08:52 AM

I do agree on the "46 and 2" cover ;)

sarettah 08-05-2019 09:03 AM

One last one and then to work.

Again, I don't know that the cover is better than the original, they are both good. The 3 dog night version got the air play while Laura's original version was pretty much missed.

I kind of like the actual singer better - the range gives his voice an urgency that hers doesn't have - but heyooo to the little dude on percussion!

LOL I don't think it's fair to compare Maynard with a 12-year-old girl. ;-)

The kids did a fantastic job. The original is absolutely better, but I love watching that video.

Original: This Flight Tonight (Joni Mitchell)

Remake: This Flight Tonight (Nazareth)

Original: Black Betty (Lead Belly) -- NOTE, 'Black Betty' itself predates Lead Belly's version; see more at Wikipedia

Remake: Black Betty (Ram Jam)

robwod 08-05-2019 10:15 AM

Perhaps an idea for a sister thread to this one... covers that failed in their attempts at remakes? :)

There'd be no shortage when ytou have bands like Quiet Riot remaking Slade's originals, or Great White attempting to redo Ian Hunter's 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy'. I bet there's no shortage of examples.

New York Groove - Ace Frehley (KISS) original was done in the early 70s by Hello.

Totally - the cover is great, especially for kids.

Spiderbait's version gained more recent exposure, but it was actually released quite a long time ago.

Nick Cave did a version in the mid 1980s.

no, no you can't.. i was waiting for someone to bring that up...

Just because Reznor said it doesn't make it so... it's a nice version, johnny cash was awesome, but the original is amazing though.

Also it's a big no for disturbed versions of the sound of silence. That is a grotesque version of a brilliant song, nothing more.

Agree. I find the original an untouchable classic.

That said, the "Wild Rover" is a traditional Irish song covered by way too many people to remember. Here's an old version of it:

And a LOT of people have tried to cover it over the years, but none of them do it as well as The Dropkick Murphy's (my opinion)

Stefan I have to ask, I know your English is really excellent, but for things like a poem or a song, do they affect you viscerally or you just understand them on an intellectual level?

maybe my vocabulary is not quite that of an educated native English speaker - and maybe I do make grammar mistakes occasionally that I would not do in German - but other than that, English is for me like German. I do not translate in my head from German to English, my thought process is in English. So yes, lyrics like those touch me emotionally just like any native speaker with empathy would be touched.

Not a cover per se, but Jon Carin NAILED the vocals and managed to outdo both Gilmour and Waters on this one. The faster tempo doesn't hurt, either. A rare feat (and treat).

Thanks for answering. I speak several languages as well but not at that level - I still translate and am not really affected in an emotional way.
