Long Island pizzeria owner is latest Dominican Republic death

A Long Island pizzeria owner joins the growing list of tourists who have died suddenly in the Dominican Republic.

Vittorio Caruso, 56 of Glen Cove, died June 17 while staying at the Boca Chica Resort in Santo Domingo, the US State Department confirmed to Fox News Friday.

His sister-in-law, Lisa Maria Caruso, said he suddenly went into respiratory distress after “drinking something.”

Caruso’s older brother, Frank Caruso, 70, confirmed his death to the Post on Saturday, saying his brother was “very healthy” when he left for the Carribean vacation about six weeks ago.

“He went to the doctor before he left, and he had no problems,” Frank Caruso said. “I spoke to the doctor. He called me when he found out he died, and he said he did not see anything wrong before he left. He could not believe the news.”

Caruso said his brother was single and co-owned Vittorio’s pizzeria in Glen Oak with one of his five siblings before selling the business about two months ago. He traveled regularly to the Dominican to stay at his time-share condo.

“This is not normal. We are very suspicious,” the elder Caruso told The Post. “We think maybe there was something in his drink or in his food.”

Like the families of others who have died in the Dominican, Lisa Maria Caruso said local authorities have provided vague answers about how their seemingly healthy loved ones unexpectedly fell fatally ill while vacationing in the Carribean nation.

“It is very hard to get a straight story from anyone there,” she said. “They even wanted to cremate the body. We insisted on having the body sent back here.”

Caruso, who was scheduled to return to New York June 27, is among three tourists in the past month and at least 11 in the past year who died while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Dozens more have reported illnesses.

What the hell is going on over there.

Drinks are deadly there. Warnings should be issued across every news site and newspaper.

Time to stop going to the Dominican Republic.

Without a doubt. It's got to be intentional. Reminds me of all the deaths at that horse track in Santa Ana. Not to compare human lives to horse lives but just as suspicious.

you can't fix stupid... they saw this shit on the news and still go there and drink.

It is likely some bacteria like legionella.
Not contagious between people. But it has a source.
Or... one immune carrier of it. There has to be others (natives) passing as well.
Only Americans on vacation make headlines here.
If it continues, a pattern will emerge but they do not have anything like the CDC we have here but I'm sure they will be assisting soon enough and will find that pattern.
But how many more will die.

A pattern has already emerged.

They're all dying after drinking alcohol from the bottles in the hotel room mini bars.

Someone is likely poisoning the bottles of alcohol in the mini bars.

Well that would not be a brain tease.
They can sample all of that and find it if it is a poison.
Must be a bit more to it.
And a cleaning product could be the cause. Likely for the glasses.
I can think of many other possibilities. And yes a legionella 'like' bacterium in the water/ice make most sense to me.

You can inject anything into those thin tops of minibar sized bottles with a small syringe very easily without breaking the seal. Those tops are almost as thin as tinfoil.

i have never drank minibar stuff. if its a cork never drink it. some evil people in this world. i always think maybe this is hell if there is a place. we have to earn our way out.

I've cleared out hotel room minibars while filming models in my beginning days, sometimes after, and even paid the concierge to make runs for me :1orglaugh:1orglaugh Models seemed to ask for a drink after a shoot, I think it was their way of getting something a little extra than just their pay :winkwink:

I think most have to do with illegal cheap alcohol in cocktails and mixes.
Also it happened that an overkill of insecticides killed people in a hotel in Thailand.
