US women's team criticized after 13-0 Thailand World Cup win - No grace or humility
 

The USA women’s team set a record World Cup scoreline as they annihilated Thailand 13-0 in their opening game in Reims, but amid the praise for their performance the team also faced criticism for their celebrations.

Striker Alex Morgan bagged five goals as the USA scored an incredible 10 times in the second half at the Stade Auguste-Delaune to record the biggest-ever winning margin at a FIFA World Cup, men’s or women’s.

But as the plaudits poured in for a stellar display from the defending champions, some observers took issue with the US players continuing to celebrate exuberantly as they racked up double figures against the hapless Thais.

Former Canadian international Clare Rustad branded the continued celebrations as “completely unnecessary” and said they showed a lack of “grace” toward their opponents.

"I just think they could have won with some humility and grace, and they just couldn’t manage to do that," Rustad said on TSN.

Unfortunately in the feminist driven sport of women's soccer such a humiliation in a public especially against those from less fortunate countries could be enough that the Thai team never get the chance to play again.

However it was expected, and greater things will come from this. The US women’s team scored more goals in one game than the men’s team has in every World Cup since 2006 combined.

Currently their in an equal pay fight with the US Soccer Federation and this win has sort of justified their cause, as women get paid less than half what the men do and its about the same with funding for training, travel

..yet... The women have more wins and are attracting more advertising dollars.

If The USA women's team win this fight against the Government, then there will be a trickle down effect to other countries, otherwise your best players are heading to America.

I think it becomes poor sportsmanship to continue celebrating each goal after it's become obvious you're kicking the living shit out of the opposing team. Asian cultures are particularly sensitive to humiliation so I can definitely see how this isn't going over real well in certain places.

It wasn't poor sportsmanship. Sure, maybe they could have celebrated less, but the rules of the World Cup include ranking teams based on how many goals they score and margin of victory. Everyone who agrees to play in the World Cup knows the rules and they know where their team stands as far as talent and how they match up against others.

I am reminded of something Mike Wilbon once said when he was asked if the Patriots running up the score on the Dolphins was bad sportsmanship. He said, "No, if you don't want to be embarrassed, play better."

You hate America and Americans so there is nothing they could do that would appease you. If they run up the score, they are unsportsmanlike assholes. If they hadn't and later in the tournament got knocked out because of goal differential from not running up the score you would call them stupid.
