You can act as if that was some grievous "lie", but exaggerating a medical condition was a common way to out of the draft. What would you have done? Student deferment? Trump probably would have done that as a Plan B, if the medical route had failed. The medical route gets you permanently disqualified, a student deferment does not, which is why people tried the medical first.

A lot of kids didn't like that war. And a lot of those kids died in a muddy ditch with a bayonet in their throats while Lieutenant Bone Spurs was getting laid and being useless.

I disagree with you here.... You are looking through history and judging it decades later, and then trying to imagine what you would have done then - but you are looking at it through the lends of a forty or fifty year old man, not a college student in the 1960s.

Back then in the 1960s protesters didn't see a difference between soldiers and the government; They were considered one and the same. Soldiers were considered "baby killers" that worked for the government. When the soldiers of Vietnam came back home they were crapped on, treated very poorly, and for the most ignored.

Very true, but I know me, and I know that I wouldn't do it. There's no way I could pretend to know what those people went through. I've never even held a gun except for a hunting rifle (I didn't hunt) so there's no way in hell I could pass judgment on any soldier. What would be important to me is that he or she is back home and safe and hopefully not messed up.

The Vietnam War was a huge mistake. Then badly carried out, badly led, both politically and militarily. It was also a huge waste of Americans lives and money. I respect the men who fought it, but that doesn't mean I agree with it being fought.
