A Southern California couple was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on Friday after the pair pleaded guilty to charges stemming from grim, headline-making accusations they beat, starved and shackled their 13 children in the family’s home, prosecutors said. David Turpin, 57, and his wife Louise Turpin, 50, had agreed to be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison as part of an agreement with Riverside County prosecutors that saw them plead guilty in February to torture, child abuse and false imprisonment charges.

Why bother to plead for 25 year minimum when you are over 50?
Do they think they will get out of prison at 75 and 84 and land a good job.

I am glad they admitted guilt. That is the first step to recovery.

In NY, the majority of sentences are indeterminate and will be expressed as 1/3 to the whole. A good example is an 8–1/3 - 25 year sentence. In this case, the inmate cannot be paroled until s/he serves 1/3 of the sentence, or 8–1/3 years. S/he can be paroled after serving 8–1/3, but if parole is denied (and it often is), the inmate will meet with the parole board every two years and can be paroled by the board then. Assuming, however, that the board denies parole every time, the inmate must be paroled after serving 2/3 of his/her sentence, or at 16–2/3 years. The remaining 8–1/3 years will be spent on parole. NY has a lot of other ways to sentence, but explaining them would take to long.

Prisoners cost upwards of ten thousand dollars a year and up. They paid for Manson for nearly fifty years. With protection, medical attention, and more, it might have cost a million dollars to house him. Rehab? Heh. No parole.
