There's a similar gotcha in Victoria Australia, where medical treatment is free, but emergency ambulance fees can be a nasty surprise:


- If you have some kind of concession card (eg low income) all ambulance rides (including helicopter) are free
- If you pay ~$100 a year for ambulance insurance, all ambulance rides (including helicopter) are free
- If neither of these apply:
+ Road ambulance is between about $USD900 - $USD1300
+ Air ambulance (helicopter) starts at about $USD8,000, plus the cost of road ambulance transport to/from the helicopter

Worst case scenario with two road trips to/from the air ambulance you're looking at about $USD 10k in fees. And this is in a country where medical care is free.
