Police say shooting may have ‘terrorist motive’ as emergency services rush to scene

A suspected gunman is at large after a shooting on a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht, which police said may have had a “terrorist motive”.

The Dutch government raised the terrorism threat level to the highest possible in the Utrecht province, and security was increased at schools, mosques and transportation hubs across the country.

Police said they believe at least person had been killed and several others injured.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he was “deeply concerned” by the incident.

Anti-terror coordinator Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said in a statement that the “threat level has gone to 5, exclusively for the Utrecht province,” referring to the highest level. “The culprit is still on the run. A terror motive cannot be excluded,” he said in a Twitter message. He called on citizens to closely follow the indications of the local police.

Police spokesman Bernhard Jens said that “one explanation is that the person [suspect] fled by car.” He did not rule out the possibility that more than one person was involved. “We want to try to catch the person responsible as soon as possible,” Jens said.

An anti-terrorism unit and emergency services rushed to the scene around the 24 Oktoberplein junction, where a square at a tram station was cordoned off. Three helicopters were despatched to the area after the shooting, which took place at about 10.45am.


Police appealed to the public to stay away to allow first responders to do their work.

The local broadcaster RTV Utrecht quoted a witness as saying he had seen a woman lying on the ground amid some kind of confrontation. Several men ran away from the scene, the witness said.

This is horrible. And it's going to continue happening.

We - meaning nearly all countries - have been handing out firearms likes candy for decades. Nearly anyone who wants one can get one. Firearms are not for sport, or for fun, or for target practice...

I can tell you how this is going to end... They are going to take all firearms away. It's already happening. Here in the United States, the laws are getting tighter and tighter. This morning there was an article about people new gun laws in New Zealand, and how people are voluntarily turning in firearms.

This is the problem in the United States.... In other countries there is a single shooting and they ban most kinds of weapons. New England and Australia come to mind. Here in the United States we say "too bad" and more recently "thoughts and prayers" and nothing gets done. Here in the United States the discussion is "If we take away all of the firearms, only the criminals will have them". Perhaps - but only at first. Eventually no one will have firearms.

I'll never forget the day I was picking up my at her high school when shots rang out. She was in the middle of a grassy field and just froze. Seconds later the school went into lockdown and she was in a full panic. It was by far the worst thirty seconds of my life. It turns out that it was a police shooting two blocks away but we didn't know that when shots rang out.

Gunman are going into our schools and murdering our children. "More guns" are not the solution. We have armed guards in schools and it's obvious that a good guy with a gun usually doesn't stop a bad guy with a gun - while they are trying to locate the gunman kids are dropping left and right.

The only solution is to remove firearms from society.

Second, I lived in Amsterdam for several months last year in a mostly Turkish/Muslim neighborhood. Everyone was cool with me (as is generally the case since I tend to get along with most everyone) but when it came to my blonde Dutch girlfriends....not so much.

While there I dated 3 Dutch girls, all blondes. Each of them told me horror stories of how the Turkish and Muslim men would curse at them, throw rocks, spit at them, threaten to rape them, called them whores, basically hated on them in a threatening way. This has been going on, according to them, for years since they started letting the Muslims in.

Now, they complained, the Musims go to The Netherlands and immediately start living off the dole (the many Government subsidies) while contributing very little. Then they go and harass/attack the blonde Dutch women. It's a ticking time bomb (literally) and the attack in Ultrecht does not surprise me. In fact, I'm amazed it hasn't happened in liberal Amsterdam many times before now.
