what is unethical is adopting a non-dominant lineage for what few benefits do occur while navigating the world as a paleface with all the privileged attached to that
guaranteed there are a ton of NA peeps here with more Indigenous 'blood' than Warren. I have prob more than most here and certainly more than Warren but still I navigate the world as the white chica as esp in the Caribbean that's what peeps see.
it is not about blood, that is quantum shit imposed by conquerers. did one grow up in a non-Euro home/fam structure? what are the ties to the community one selects to adopt [palefaces have much more latitude to choose this]? how is one perceived by the world around them?
my family survived the 60's scoop, my mom actually dropped out of nursing school at 16 (she graduated high school at 14 she is that smart) to work so that my grandmother didn't have to chose between rent/clothes and food for her kids. clothes always won out if a choice had to be made, to keep the social workers wanting to take away my mom and aunts off their doorstep. Native and low income was a really scary time in that era particularly
without a middle-class white father I would have been born into entirely different economic circumstances
in my case I grew up with Native values in a Native fam structure. got into a kerfluffle with one of my aunts (she was initially so pissed with me) when I applied to uni as a white person as I felt it would be unethical to take all the benefits of pale skin and blue eyes and the benefits of a social identity that isn't mine. yes I identify as Metis/Mi'kmaq but to use that to get a scholarship or acceptance on those terms when in life I am treated like a white girl? not ok.
She thought I was trying to deny my history and she should have known better.
I couldn't pretend I'm not born to a white dude with all those skin-priv benefits [socio and econ] attached and get called ma'am by cops who don't kill me and then claim equality of opportunity for benefit
Warren disgusts me. she doesn't have a clue about anything real.
