                                                          I've wondered that a time or two myself, but mainly I think the detective was just a bit of a dick and frustrated about the lack of hard evidence.

                                                          The guy was a waiter, and the detective would eat where he worked and request him as his server. Could you imagine having to serve the guy who has basically accused you to your face of brutally murdering your girlfriend?

                                                          He could also count on being called in for questions in the middle of the night during final exams.

                                                          One of the things that complicated the case is the john she was supposed to meet was in the middle of a drug/booze/escort and repeat bender. Apparently, he was so fucked up he had no idea whether or not she ever showed up, and if she did what time she left.
