Robert Muller was the head of the FBI. He's also highly revered by his peers.

Matt Whitaker has had a career which involved personal injury and breach of contract cases when he wasn't dabbling in his many failed business ventures. He's been working for a scam patent company promoting products like the "male toilet for men with large dicks" and has to pay a 25 million dollar fine. He's a grifter, basically.

I'd expect Trump to not know the difference between the two men, but are you also that stupid?

The Senate unanimously confirmed Mueller as FBI director on August 2, 2001, voting 98–0 in favor of his appointment.

The structure of appointing a special independent prosecutor has been approved by the senate. This is done when even the optics are bad and the government integrity itself may be questioned. It is done to give the people 'FAITH' that wrong doings will indeed be prosecuted, even at the highest levels.

It says that the AG may appoint one as needed to look at specific things. Not act like the AG. Kinda a difference if you do not know it. The SP's job is narrowly specified and focused.

Nobody should have anything to fear unless they did wrong. They can't make-up evidence, it all has to be tested under the law. Even then they will not likely see full Justus for their bad deeds. He was talking about the internals of the national security from the FBI's point of view and was his job at the time.

He did not determine or investigate any of the WMD in Iraq. He stated that based on the data Sec Powell presented at the UN, we needed to be concerned internally. Anything outside of the US is the CIA and NSA problem. Guess what, he never held those offices.

It is because Powell got duped by the VP skewing data and I don't even blame Powell for any of that. But it should be a warning to not let this crap happen again. But it looks like you are asking for it to happen again.

If you have read any on the follow-up investigations, you would know that the VP had twisted what the intelligence community knew and therefore Powell was handed that skewed data to run before the UN. It was not his investigation. The administration had used him because he had a trust factor that was admired by most leaders of the world.
The admin needed to persuade the rest of the world. Get them onboard.

It is just this type of abuse of power the investigations of a special prosecutor has aim to prevent and somehow, you don't want it. LOL

Sec of State does not preform the investigations, he did not even have the oversight for their production, they are presented to them.
If they are wrong, there was a failure somewhere than whose hands they ended up in.

You brought up Powell not me. You said he was "duped" as a 4 Star General, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor and Secretary of State on the military capabilities of Iraq. Forgetting that he was intimately involved in Desert Storm and the aftermath.

Obviously he knew just as much about Iraq, if not more than anyone else in government. To suggest that someone "duped" him on military and security issues on Iraq, which is a substantial part of life's work is just dumb.

What did he have authority to do ? Just what he did as directed by the administration in which he serves.

My opinion in hindsight all these years later is that...ALL of them were in on this. Mueller damn well knew what was really there. As did Powell and every other top intelligence official.

We ended up in a war with Iraq. Lots of people got filthy rich. Meanwhile, young men and women in the military lost their lives and the losses to Iraqi's were through the roof.

How would Muller known any of it ? Not in the scope of the FBI. They are strictly domestic.
Muller's job was director of FBI which has no authority to investigate foreign intelligence and probably would have been like pulling teeth to get any of it from the CIA or NSA.
And they would have to answer why they want to know because it's not in the scope of their authority. They would have to justify any request with a specific investigative lead in need. And they still may not give them all that they may have had on it. Just what they thought was needed and were willing to.

Now, today, that would come under the Sec Of Homeland Security to co-ordinate that intel from inside the us (FBI) and that outside the US (pentagon,nsa,cia and more than a dozen others).

That fact of nobody sharing info when it was needed in a valid investigation is what caused the forming of DHS. But I see it as still largely ornamental co-ordination.
Nobody wants to share their intel because it will leak out other services. At least that fear still exists.

It's fairly clear to me that when Cheney was sec of defense, he wanted to go further than GBush1 wanted to go and found the opportunity. He stacked the deck under GBush2.
They manipulated existing data he knew was false.
Especially the WMD issue and that was their key argument for military action.
They knew at the time that Hussein had fabricated that data to thwart off his local adversaries. that was the official conclusion after gulf war 1.
The government knew it way before 911. but they had to build a case. Suddenly that bad intel was turned to valid intel again.
Remember during gulf war one that all those baby milk factories and pharma factories getting bombed on bad intel.

If it were me, there were enough violations to the no fly zone then that would have ended the deal for the end to hostilities to actually start them up again.

Cheney wanted to bring the government all the way down. He had to build a case, It was his job. He knew more about what was going on inside Iraq than anyone else in government. Powell just delivered the case created to the UN months after they already had authorization for war. So it's just making a case for public support.
But weeks after that infamous speaking at the UN, Powell found out a few weeks later through the cia that the case was somewhat a lie. They had put a rush on this so nobody could really fact check it well.

The FBI does have a job to protect the US from 'any threat that can manifest on our soil'.
And they don't investigate something outside the US unless it is directly tied to a existing investigation inside the US. Those duties belong to other services.

In fact, it was because the FBI could not get complete data from the CIA that may be to blame for possibly preventing 911 in the first place.

The AG should have appointed a Independent council then, but it is well known how hard it is to proceed with that when so many national security secrets may be exposed.
