It was a US president... can't remember which one -- but he was pissed... the meter was supposed to be based on the circumference of the Earth -- something that we all share -- scientists figured everyone could agree to use a system based on the dimensions of Earth... but the calculations to measure the meter were based on measurements in Europe... err mainly France I think... so it was really an American ego thing that kept us from using the metric system...
