GFY Introduction to MAME-based Video Games
Maybe this is pointless but i've got some free time on my hands so I felt like writing this....
http://www.mame.net/screenshots/mk3.jpg MAME lets you play 1000's of classic arcade games - the exact same games you played as a kid...Everything from the original Space invaders...to games like Cruisin USA, Mortal Kombat, and other recent favorites. http://www.mame.net/screenshots/robotron.jpg Basically, MAME emulates the hardware of those classic games. High powered graphics cards and fast processors that we have today can emulate the chipsets of past arcade cabinets. http://www.mame.net/screenshots/roadblst.jpg MAME isnt run by a company or sold as a product. Its built by video game enthusiasts. It's constantly being updated to accomodate new games. http://www.mame.net/screenshots/mspacman.jpg From the FAQ: MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with a game's data files (ROMs), MAME will more or less faithfully reproduce that game on a PC. MAME can currently emulate over 1900 unique (and over 3300 in total) classic arcade video games from the three decades of video games - '70s, '80s and '90s. The ROM images that MAME utilizes are "dumped" from arcade games' original circuit-board ROM chips. MAME becomes the "hardware" for the games, taking the place of their original CPUs and support chips. Therefore, these games are NOT simulations, but the actual, original games that appeared in arcades. MAME's purpose is to preserve these decades of video-game history. As gaming technology continues to rush forward, MAME prevents these important "vintage" games from being lost and forgotten. http://www.mame.net/screenshots/ringrage.jpg |
MAME works off standard PC peripherals like joysticks and mice. It might take you an hour or two to figure out the correct setup and controls, but if you ask anyone who fucks with MAME...its worth it.
http://www.mame.net/screenshots/paperboy.jpg MAME comes with no ROMS (the game images themselves). Playing ROMS you dont own is illegal so consider yourself warned. However, typing in MAME in Kazaa will pull up tons of other ROMS that other people might be illegally be sharing so use your own judgement. http://www.mame.net/screenshots/msh.jpg From the FAQ: Warning! MAME is an emulator. It reproduces, more or less faithfully, the behavior of various arcade machines. But hardware is useless without software, so images (files) of the ROMs which run on that hardware are required. Such ROMs, like all commercial software, are copyrighted. Therefore, it is illegal to possess a ROM image file if you do not own the original ROM. Needless to say, ROMs are not distributed together with MAME. Distribution of MAME with ROM images is a violation of copyright law and a violation of the MAME license, and it should be promptly reported to the authors so that appropriate legal action can be taken. http://www.kemuland.com/images/mame32.jpg |
The link to download the Windows version of MAME is below...you gotta go through a bunch of bullshit mainstream stuff. Last time i checked there was a spot to avoid all the REGISTRATION materials and just download the software.

MrPopUp,
how long you been in the MAME scene? Do you remember when MAME first came out and only supported about 10-20 games? I used to run one of the first MAME sites, I had The MAME Shack back with Atmospherical Heights was one of the only sites out there. Also I was lucky enough to be on the beta team and got to meet and hangout with some of the big boys. ahhhh those were the days! |
