Is this normal?

This is the second time its happened to me in the past month, I imagine its common practise in the states but I have no idea thats why I as asking..

First time I was walking out from a mall to my car and a van pulls up with these two grungy fucks, offering to sell me a laptop really cheap. I passed

and Today, i am pumping gas, and these young guys come up to me in a really nice escalade and asked me if I wanted to buy speakers out of the back of there truck..

Is this common practise or a new sales technique? :winkwink:

EscortBiz 05-01-2003 01:07 PM

na, these guys were totally rich french kids that didnt know how to sell anything, probably stolen from there buddies house or some shit haha..

There opening line was

"do you speak english"

What the fuck do they think, they are deep in my province :)

Mr. Jim 05-01-2003 01:09 PM

Tell them you are a cop and they are not worth the paperwork

GTS Mark 05-01-2003 01:13 PM

I had that happen to me when I lived in Mississauga. 2 guys in a white van rolled up and asked me if I wanted to buy some speakers. I told them no thanks and they drove off.

I thought it was an urban legend but sure enough it wasn't!

Dude, this happened to me TWICE in the last 3 months.
Same guy.

He's clean cut, looks like a used car sales man.

Pulls up next to me while im getting out of my car at the bank, and asks me if I want to buy some home speakers for a killer price.

I then remember the same guy hit me up late night one night in at the Taco Bell parking lot. Same thing, van and speakers for home.

He said he would even come to my home and set em up so i could listen to em.

Strange shit.
Must be workin if they are doing it where you live too.
SOme new tactic.

asuna 05-01-2003 01:16 PM

That happened to me a few times...

didcha buy something>?

Probably wants to scope out your house. What better way to knows what to rob and what security to watch for when he breaks into the place after setting up the speakers...

The speaker scam has been around for a while. I remember even seeing something about on 20/20 or one of them shows a long time ago.
They'll tell you the speakers are real nice and offer a great price, but they're real pieces of shit, the kinda stuff you can pick up at a flea market. Big cabinets and shit with terrible electronics.

Yeah they did say something like that.

Jamdin 05-01-2003 01:22 PM

Y'all's fancy using them vans. We use pick-ups since it's easy to load & unload. Just be careful of the six rifles since one of them has a safety that doesn't work...

Pipecrew 05-01-2003 01:23 PM

well us canadians are always behind 10 years, I guess i will go hook up these 50,000 dollars speakers I got for the low price of 39.99 j/k

Vox 05-01-2003 01:23 PM

Happens all the time in Montreal, don't bother with the speakers, they look real nice but are POS.

Some french TV show did an expose on the company a few months ago, I guess they just moved on into your region.

SpaceAce 05-01-2003 01:27 PM

People, people, just use your common sense. The first thing that should come into your head in this situation is, "Do I really want to buy merchandise from the back of a stranger's van in the gas station parking lot?"

Yeah thats what I was assuming.

The first time I saw the guy you get the impression that they may be stolen speakers and you could probably get a good deal since they are quality stolen speakers.

But the second time around months later him selling the EXACT same shit out of his van you start to think it must be a biz or a scam of sorts selling shitty stuff like you said.

HE talks to you real quiet like lookin around nervous to make ya think they are stolen and he can cut ya a deal on this quality shit he stole, when in fact he probably orders this shit for dirt cheap from some shitty supplier, and sells them like brand name shit.

According to my friends they ran into this guy also during the summer! same thing, speakers for the house.

Easton 05-01-2003 01:41 PM

i had some dude try to sell me suits outta the trunk of his Benz about 2 years ago... like WTF?

who buys a suit on the street corner?

asuna 05-01-2003 01:44 PM

or it could be some police stakeout or something

MCsteve-matrix 05-01-2003 01:45 PM

why can't they sell hot chicks out of the back of a van, i may consider that...but i'd probably end up with the clap or some other VD.

kevinale 05-01-2003 01:55 PM

The speaker was a scam.. They've approached me before too:

speaker one is the oldest gypsy robbery in the book. theyll upsell - or even ask you to come up and pick up "better" ones...and youll be robbed.

i guess you never heard of bangbus...

either that or start paying attention to what your mother does for a living.

Fletch XXX 05-01-2003 02:06 PM

I get hit with that ALL THE TIME.

I swear here in Hollywood there are vans driving around all day.

Most of the time its cops though, be careful.

Here in CAlifornia they do that as sting operations.

Trickly LA cops are sick with set ups like this.

'Hey man, wanna buy some studio speakers.' If they say studio speakers, that hints to it being ripped from a studio and thats how the trap is set.

;)

heads up.

benthompson 05-01-2003 02:08 PM

somebody asked me if I wanted to buy a laptop before?? He offered really a good price. I paid the money to him and he put the laptop in the bag and gave it to me. Then he drove away.

I was going home happily cos I though I got a nice laptop for almost quarter price.

I opened the bag and what I saw was 2 bottle of waters , covered with some papers.

He changed the bags just before he gave it to me..

I lost the money and I really wanted to cry...

Never ever trust them!!!

-=HOAX=- 05-01-2003 02:19 PM

I think some of this is legit...there are some company's that are doing this on purpose.

A friend of mine was approached about some home audio speakers. Digital Audio was the brand...they somehow get these people to sell like that for them..

My theory is this that they give the sales people receipt that show the items worth at like $1200 the sales dude says I'll give em to ya for $320. You can look around and you see the listed price $1200. But they aren't worth that...I compared the Digital Audio sytem that my buddy bought to other systems and for 1200 you can get a real nice system...the system he bought had a passive amp...with is low tech.

I think the compnay making them has a bunch of stock on hand an they want to liquidate...

Alot of those guys are common fences dealing off the truck stolen goods...and I think some of them have inferior product they sell by making you think the product is hot and you're getting a good deal...

-=HOAX=- 05-01-2003 02:22 PM

HAHAHAHA....these are the ones...

You haven't been hit until you get the guy in the beat up 1978 Buick Riviera with his trunk loaded down in ice...inside you find fish, steaks etc...all unwrapped!

This kind of shit has been going down in Texas since I was a kid.

Microwaves, t.v.'s, stereos, food, food stamps...you can just about buy anything out of the back of a van in Texas ;)

I pretty much grew up in bars, my mother was a waitress, and bar tender as well as bar fly.

I've eaten holiday dinners in bars...LOL...but this shit is standard fare on any strip or boulevard that has it's fair share of bars, and hourly motels.

Aza 05-01-2003 02:52 PM

quite often here in the UK i get guys pulling up to me in nice cars (obviously rented)
they reckon they have been to a 'jewelery exhibition' and have a few pieces left over that they are willing to sell me for cheap. but the jewelery they have is the shittest you have ever seen....but they are pro scammers, they have the catalogues with the retail prices etc

fucking fools.....this happens quite a lot, i guess a lot of people fall for it!

The laptop one is a funny scam, some guy approaches you in the street, offers to sell you a laptop, zips open the case and there it is, off you go to the ATM, give him your money he gives you the laptop. Funny thing is you can't open the case, while you struggle the guy drives off. Reason you can't open it is 'cos its been switched for one with the zip superglued and contains a laptop size block of wood.... eh eh eh
