Irish ( I mean it ) people in here, please

Guys,

I'm in Poland now. I'm originally from Ukraine.

In Kiev, we have O'Brien's pub that serves Harp beer.

In Poland, fuck me, I cant find Harp anywhere.

How do you really treat Harp in Ireland?

CaptainHowdy 05-22-2018 12:08 PM

Not a single decent lager in Poland?? That's sad.

Lots of.

But I'm just curious about Harp.

I like Harp myself.

EddyTheDog 05-22-2018 01:14 PM

It used to be big in the UK - Not seen it for years though...

Of course! I find odd someone would actually miss an Irish lager.

harp´s a lager. We´ve loads of irish bars here in Spain, selling guiness obviously. However, the lager´s all San Miguel, Estrella, mahou or cruzcampo, all great tasting! Mahou´s usually cheapest at about 2€ a pint with San Miguel about 2.50 and cruz nearly 3€ a pint :2 cents:

That's what I was saying...

Cruzcampo is horrid - I am happy with Mahou...

of course, this is related to liquor.

I just like lager, I drink lager only, no other types.
My favourite is Peroni, but as we speak about an Irish Pub I sort of assumed
they would be serving it. See, in Kiev we have Irish pub O'Brien's / Beer

So,

back to Harp, I had a chat with a local ( Polish ) Irish pub and they were fairly squared,
as usual Polish experience - traditional, not ready to try any new thing, unfriendly to a client.

Tell, have you seen Italian wine for sale in Spain EVAH? I love Valpolicella Ripasso - was unable to find it anywhere in the store of Barcelona.

Beer wise - San Miguel is okay.

In Barcelona, just go to an Italian food shop, or lidl/carefour would probably be your best bet.

Why are you wanting to pay twice the price for Italian wine? Spain produces amazing red wines and the markup on non Spanish wine is huge.

Ripasso is a bit niche anyway, you see it where you live as it's near the region it's made.. You probably wont see it in Calabria.

I'm selective. I strictly like Valpolicella Ripasso. Spanish wine sucks donkey balls.

Nah, Polish people are fairly squared in general, the sun come out they go nuts, rainy days is what Polish love. It is so traditional that many people in my age NEVER tried sushi. For the last 5 years GAP, Springfield and Marks & Spencer left Poland. There is no high quality food stores at all, Alma is gone and now the niche is free to take over. Lots of food is now gone - French butter, Evian and so on...

And when I showed the local Irish pub selection of beer there is in Kiev they simply replied we don't need that choice here in Poland - nobody wants that, LOL.

Italia is otay. Same shit but warmer a bit.

Out of the few 1000 different wines Spain produces.. how many have you had?

Do not assume everything tastes the same.

There are 100 year old garnacha vines producing some of the finest wine in the world.

a 5 euro bottle of rioja is not all Spanish wines.

Out of my narrow experience I have come to the conclusion that I like the following wines, and it suits me well enough to stick to, the range of $10-$20 per bottle.

- Valpolicella Ripasso
- Languedoc ( Syrah + Grenage ).
- Bordeaux ( Cabernet + Merlot ).

As simple as that.

ok we're getting somewhere.

- Languedoc ( Syrah + Grenage ).

Murcia and Alicante/Valencia produces some decent Syrah/Garnacha wines for a good price, but you probably wont find them out of the region.

There are some nice Garnachas from Aragon for 10euros +

If you dont like the usual Spanish wines, they're mainly tempranillo (Rioja/Toro), so avoid that grape.

Spain's pretty good at telling you the grape, not like France where they expect you to know.

If you find yourself in Barca again, try the gourmet club of the corte ingles, they will have a decent variety with a fair few under 20 euros.

this :2 cents:

and even this, a rioja can spend from 1€ to 1000€

anyone saying a spanish wine is good or bad is as stupid as saying all wine tastes the same :1orglaugh

tbh, a table wine in spain can taste different from one shop to another and same with bottle to another...

We pay 90cents a litre, it´s great table wine. It tastes like a 5quid bottle from tesco, alas, go to another shop and a 2€ bottle may taste like crap.

Spanish wine the bomb, so many different tastes & grapes, from lands that are so different with rains all year, rains once a year, dry lands and wet lands! :thumbsup

Re the original question

I remember Harp from the 70's / 80's only because of the advert when I was a kid.
A properly shit slogan 'Harp stays sharp to the bottom of the glass'
