Hosting Question

Whats the difference between purchasing a Dedicated Server and getting virtual hosting?

Thanks

Moose 04-30-2003 06:58 PM

Big difference.

One you are on a box with a hundred other people (virtual).
And the other you are on it by yourself (dedicated) .

Candid Hosting has a special on...A dedicated server for $95 a month...are they any good?

Pointless 04-30-2003 06:58 PM

dedicated is better over v-host for bigger loads

its faster its not shared

how much transfer?

50 gig ?

MrPanama 04-30-2003 07:00 PM

Yup 50Gigs...I dont really care about the how much bandwidth I get as long as its reliable and there are no hidden catches.....

I noticed to have Windows 2000 on it costs an extra $100 a month but linux is free....I can do everything I need with Linux right?

virtual dedicated servers and dedicated servers behave same and you can not understand the difference unless you see the box itself. But you share the server with some other virtual servers in virtual dedicated servers.

you can reboot your own server without affecting the others in the same box.

DEdicated servers are recommended but if you can find a good virtual dedicated server deal in a server which has got less then 5-6 virtual dedicated servers, then it would worth going for it.

Go with dedicated if you know your site will be doing lots of processing with CGI/PHP scripts, you will be driving massive traffic, need 100's of GB of bandwidth, and need lots of storage on the hard drive (like Gigabytes).

Otherwise, a virtual host will suit your needs fine and most likely be much cheaper.

Sweet ok sounds good....so with dedicated you dont get more access than virtual? Like I want to be able to modify stuff on my hosting (domains ect.) without having to contact them each time.

benthompson 04-30-2003 07:12 PM

it's nothing to do with that. The access you will get depends on the company you have chosen. You can get the same accesses on both.

yes, some hosts offer control panels, like Plesk, for their dedicated servers, where you do get more control like that... domains, subdomains, e-mails, etc.. There may even be virtual accounts that offer this same flexibility, though... and some dedicated plans make you ask for all of this still...

slapass 04-30-2003 07:24 PM

Candid wanted another 30 a month for a panel is that normal?

On a dedicated yep... That means that they actually own the license ;)

On a virtual account no...you shouldnt be paying for that.

Mr.Panama,

(In a overdone spanish/french accent)
Why dont you ICQ me now, Huh?

Im you're Huckleberry.

I'll see what other packages, if any, might suite you as well...

PS. JuicyLinks...dude, the underwear around the neck...I swear I saw skid marks. Enjoy the new server.

I've never gone with dedicated hosting because I don't know how much technical knowledge is required. Fear based on ignorance. A web-based control panel would take care of that, I guess.

$15 And we set up your domains, IPs and FTP access, basically all you need to start serving websites from it. And $15 an hour for technical support by e-mail or ICQ. We also have cPanel/WHM control panels available for $50/mo extra (default is the free webmin panel, which is very advanced also), cPanel is arguably the best.

Virtual plans also come with cPanel, demo is available on the website. Just check out the plans at VibeHosting.Com or icq me for details.

Yes and much more at the same time. Linux and FreeBSD is IMHO the best server OS available.

$199/mo

server & 1mbps

we setup the machine from there its like your own private virtual machine you just email us with what you need done or we'll teach you how to do it via our simple shell scripts and amazingly no we charge nothing for this :)

BTW no cogent and proud of it :)

on the bases of virtual hosting. its still good as long as your host doesnt overfill which with the price of servers now shouldnt be a problem

anyway my info is below if anyone has any questions
