Go ahead and post it. I sent a few hours trying to search google and various resources and boards to try and find it. I know others have the same problem too, hence why I did it.

I use a similar approach, however you combine that with php and with memeber auth and you got a winner.

Yea, it isn't the most perfect way to do it, but it will prevent a lot of hotlinking. Basically the quick and dirty way to do it with a couple lines of code.

Not good for movie galleries. Most tgps ban java script so page won't even get listed.

Unfortunitely, yes, for TGPs this won't work on all. I personally use it on avs sites now.

Hmm... could you have some PHP code that temporarily adds a unique u/p to a htpasswd for that directory, and then a crontab job expires them 10 minutes later? That way you can link to them like:

http://1234:[email protected]/movies/mymovie.mpg

The catch is that if the u/p expires before the surfer clicks on the link, they'll get a password prompt.

A way around that would be to use a u/p that expires a certain number of times after it's accessed. That way a couple of friends handing around the URL on IRC works ok, but a site hotlinking it will stop working after 5 loads.

Because this script is a history. It creates many problems. People posting galleries will get blacklisted by TGPs and MGPs. Those who use it on other types of pages can expect a considerable number of their visitors denied from watching movies because they turn off the cookies. 90% stated on your page is an understatement.
