Best song of the past decade?

Keep in mind this is a British survey and on a middle of the road rock station. Still, what would your choice be? I am an REM fan so I am not too upset with them being there but the Verve?

Wonderwall voted song of the decade

Oasis hit Wonderwall has been named the greatest song of the past decade.

Music fans chose a top five of downbeat songs in a poll to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Virgin Radio.

Wonderwall was a number two hit in 1995 - kept off the top of the charts by Robson And Jerome's I Believe.

The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony was runner-up in the Virgin poll. REM came third with Everybody Hurts.

Oasis also came fourth in the countdown of the top 100 songs since the station's launch, with the track Don't Look Back In Anger.

Why Does It Always Rain On Me, by Travis, completed the melancholic top five. And there was even more misery in sixth position with Radiohead's song of self-loathing Creep.

Whatever, again by Oasis, came in at 14. Red Hot Chili Peppers also managed a hat-trick in the top 20, the highest being By The Way at number seven.

Listeners were asked to choose their favourite track from a shortlist of the ten from each of the last ten years.

Oasis is fun. Not the greatest of the decade though.
Smells like teen spirit was damn good before it wore out. I'd have to vote that, I still get chills from it.

Rose Crans 04-30-2003 03:15 AM

I think Smells Like Teen Spirit came out over 10 years ago.

Sarah_Jayne 04-30-2003 04:37 AM

well, seeing as you are looking for a dedicated relationship do you think you could compete with the husband and boyfriend that I already have? If not Ross might be a bit more your style ;) Lucky Ross.

too bad he cant write his own notes. he didnt get a penny for that song

as for the song, even though im not a fan of pearl jam would go out to "jeremy" or "losing my religion" by rem...fuck "everybody hurts". that song is too depression

Damn that one brings back some memories:thumbsup

Sarah_Jayne 04-30-2003 08:28 AM

see now Everybody Hurts for me is not a depressing song. It is a musical version of Pandora's box. It gives us the depression, it tells us we all get that way and then at the end shows us there is hope. I rail against it being labled depressing (though most people do) because to me at the time it was a 'hang in there kid'song.

Tala 04-30-2003 08:41 AM

"Love You to Death" or "Black No. 1" by Type O Negative.

"Beside You" and "Sacred Ground" by Queensryche are good listens as well.

But....VERVE?! Ick.

scoreman 04-30-2003 09:58 AM

ughh wonderwall? blech

My choices would depend upon my mood, but if i was limited to one song I would have to give the nod to a tune that makes me want to play it LOUD like

Killing in the name of ...Rage against the machine
(late summer 1992 so maybe this isnt eligible)
