Who still goes to the theater to watch films ?

How many of you still go to the cinema / theater to see the latest film release. I ask because i hate going, having to listen to idiots talking while the film is playing or listen to the rustling of chip bags and slurping sounds. Even idiots who still insist on having their phone on or texting.

I have gotten into some serious altercations due to the selfishness of these people.
I would rather wait until the film is released on 4K ultra and watch it at home on my OLED TV. Better image quality and no fucking idiots to deal with, also if i want to take a piss i can pause the film and not miss anything drink a few beers or eat food without having to worry about others.

Bladewire 02-28-2018 10:32 AM

I still go!

I love the group feel of being surrounded by a bunch of people on opening night and experiencing something we all have in common together. Especially so for Star Wars movies.

MrBottomTooth 02-28-2018 11:05 AM

I just go as an excuse to take the girlfriend out of the house. I have a 120 inch screen at home with an atmos sound system better than a lot of theaters, plus a real commercial popcorn maker, so it's really a complete waste of time and money. Plus I hate people. But if it shuts her up for a week I guess it's worth it.

TheDynasty 02-28-2018 11:12 AM

I stay at home like a hermit

Rochard 02-28-2018 11:15 AM

I still go to the movies.

There are some movies I want to see in the theater for the experience. Marvel, Star Wars, etc....

I also go to the movies on Tuesdays for $5 movie night.

When it's a movie I really want to see.... I'll go see it a few times - once on opening night, and then again a few weeks later at $5 movie night.

Are there any premium movie theaters in your area?

The theater I use is targeted towards adults. It's styled as a lounge, with full bar and billiards plus sports on the TVs. I really enjoy the food and they have great drinks. The seating itself is a La-Z-Boy style recliner with a blanket and pillow, complementary popcorn and food/drink service.

It's a great experience and everyone I have taken loves it. I would not go to a normal theater again, they annoy me.

Yes! Exactly!

I love seeing movies on opening day for exactly the same reason. It's fun and you make new friends in the process.

Anyone who doesn't treat themselves by going to a movie is missing out on one of life's simple pleasures. Sitting in a dark room, watching a big screen and getting swept up in a good story is almost magical. It's a great reason for a date, it's relaxing, it's fun, and its something that we're actually pretty lucky to experience. Yes, I have a huge appreciation for the movies.

ilnjscb 02-28-2018 11:44 AM

I like going to movies cause the sound is better, the screen is bigger, and sometimes people are fun

Outlinezero_yourmofoLOLO 02-28-2018 12:07 PM

I still go as well, on the plus side a friend of mine works the IT for a chain of cinemas so I get free drinks and popcorn :thumbsup

AllAboutCams 02-28-2018 12:13 PM

I go for big films and something to do.

Scott McD 02-28-2018 12:15 PM

Took my wife to see 50 Shades last week then we fucked like bunnies once we got home so yeah I guess it still has it's advantages...

Honez 02-28-2018 12:21 PM

I haven't been to a movie theater in probably 12 years. Now drive-ins are a different story.

mineistaken 02-28-2018 12:23 PM

I never encountered people talking or using phones in the movie theater, maybe location/civilization dependence?
As I am always surprised how people on gfy complan about that as if this is non stop usual occurrence and not some exceptions.

No, this area, "New England" although the first to be settled is in fact more like a third world country.

ianmoone332000 02-28-2018 12:32 PM

Take the kids to see all the marvel movies and anything else they want to see. Will be going to see ready player one, avengers infinity war and the new Jurassic park over the next few months

gnawledge 02-28-2018 12:45 PM

I just saw Game Night, in theatre. I saw it at 11:45 a.m. and it was an awesome experience for the wife and I. Most young assholes are still recovering from late night drug binge?still asleep. And the people in there are usually old folks who are bored and solo dudes who are bored and have no movie partner. So it?s ultra chill mode.

A lot of places have bistros and leather chairs. So the wife and I hear people smacking and it?s ultra annoying.

Occasionally we have to tell people to shut the fuck up during a movie, and they usually do-so.

I still go with my GF as we like to go out and see the films before they are available on DVDs. It's a different experience. We actually avoid the first screenings due to the annoying crowds and we prefer just a few people in the theater.

brassmonkey 02-28-2018 02:22 PM

don't want to go to a murder show...

CurrentlySober 02-28-2018 03:05 PM

Naturally, I voted that I cunt a4d2 go, but tbf, I really dont go very much at all.

I took my boy to see 'The Lion King' back in about 94, but didn't go to another cinema until last year, where I went with my son and his wife to watch Trainspotting 2

I did however feel that it was ridiculously expensive for what it was and would have been more than happy to wait for a blu-ray release to watch on the huge screen at home...

bronco67 02-28-2018 03:05 PM

It depends on the movie. If its the latest special effectsy explodey movie then I like to see it in the theater. I don't care how big home TV's get...it'll never duplicate the theater experience. Unless I have a room that holds 300 people and has a 50 foot screen with state of the art Dolby sound.

The experience of sitting in that darkened room with hundreds of strangers, enjoying a film is something that can't be duplicated at home. And I've been finding that most people "get it" when it comes to how to behave at the movies. I can't remember the last time someone pissed me off in the theater. Granted, my threshold for douchiness in that setting has gotten better over the years, but I find that most of them have been good. I like having those other people around me.

We have this. Locally they opened up what is called "Studio Movie Grill". It's a full bar and restaurant - You can eat and drink during the movie.

The other theaters are following this trend and upgrading. The theater I go to has huge comfy leather recliners, with reserved seating. It's nice.

dillfly2000 02-28-2018 04:15 PM

I go, not as much as I used to. Maybe once a month
Still enjoy it.

All the stuff you don't like is the best part of going. LOL!

Axeman 02-28-2018 06:05 PM

I still go, as its one of the few places I can unplug, turn off the phone and just enjoy something.

davidCRM 03-01-2018 06:11 AM

i would pick a 5th option....

Paul Markham 03-01-2018 08:21 AM

We do. Saw the Shape of Water at the weekend. Not bad but nothing more.

Adultium 03-01-2018 08:32 AM

prefer to watch a movie at home than experience discomfort from other people in the theater

^^^this.

Also you can't put it on pause to take a leak when you want to. It's just an all around uncomfortable experience to me, when i can also sit back on a comfortable couch without the little noises from people like you're in public transport. Yes that's it. Sitting in a movie theater reminds me of sitting in public transport. It's an annoyance. And i'm not gonna pay to be annoyed :2 cents:

PR_Glen 03-01-2018 09:14 AM

I think this has more to do with you having shitty theatres in your area still. This was a minor issue maybe 6 or 7 years ago here but the sound systems now drown out any of that noise for the most part, which make it impossible for anyone on the other end of the phone to hear you. texting on phones in a theatre you are pretty much yelled at by anyone around you or asked to leave for the most part too.

It's even gotten better lately. In most theatres here now they switched to the extra wide seating with huge leg room and mechanically reclining seats. It really adds to the experience and I love going again. I've always gone really but there is much less distraction this way.

Zeiss 03-01-2018 09:46 AM

I like to go. :)

have you been to the new Dolby Atmos rooms yet? Reclining seats, state of the art sound with speakers covering the entire ceiling and the best picture I've seen yet.

The cell phone thing was an issue in the late 90's early 2000's when they became more available and pervasive, but most people have gotten the memo on how to behave in a theater when it comes to phones. I almost got into a fight (at Fight Club ironically) over an asshole in front of me blabbing on his phone.

I didn't go for years but got back to it the last 6 months. I prefer to wait until after the movie has been out for a few weeks and then go to the theater on a weekday - during the day. It's lovely man, 3 people in the whole fucking theater :1orglaugh

I used to do that but after buying an LG SIGNATURE OLED TV 77" i find the quality on the TV far outways the local theater screen. Plus living in Maine it really is like a third world country and theaters are 10-20 years behind , say California or London. They are only just getting reclining seats ?

Not since 2012.
But I still go to art house stuff, films at museums, in cafes, that kind of thing.
My dates like it like that.

NETbilling 03-02-2018 12:45 AM

I love going to the movies and movie popcorn

candyflip 03-02-2018 05:15 AM

bronco67 03-02-2018 01:19 PM

Walked out of Black Panther (and got a refund) today because the movie stopped three times and the sound kept dropping.

overdose 03-02-2018 01:55 PM

Brian mike 03-02-2018 01:56 PM

You don't know what you're missing!

The next time you go, treat yourself to a movie in IMAX format. Huge screen, crystal clear image, and rock-concert volume sound.

In fact, look around for "Laser IMAX" - its a brand new format that replaces the projector bulb with RGB lasers for an even clearer picture.

That's too bad, but theatres are great at giving passes or refunds. When I saw the last Star Trek (yuck), the sound cut out for only about 7 seconds. It was no big deal at all but they gave everyone in the threatre free passes anyway.

oppoten 03-02-2018 04:13 PM

Nope. It's time has gone.

Hollywood was a uniquely 20th century phenomenon, despite its best efforts to cling onto relevance. History will judge it that way.
