OK, so yesterday I had some kind of office-meltdown because of a fucking shitty product called skype. I was always shit, but since MS acquired it, it is just plain fucking disgusting and annoying pile of rotten elephant shit.

I uninstalled, wiped all mentions in regedit, and decided to look for an alternative.

I was always an ICQ guy [it went shit too, but it was an option to use the very old (and good) versions] and it took lot of time to give up using ICQ and start using skype because everyone moved to it.

It is a must for me to use this crap somehow, and even I need to run two accounts at the same time [my own account and the GotPorn support as well].

So after getting rid of this shit called skype I started looking for a good 3rd party software which can handle skype accounts.

I asked for suggestions and soon I got two recommendations, Pidgin and Rambox

Pidgin I've heard of already, had to add some plugin to be able to add a skype account, but it did not fetch the existing logs, and combined the two account's buddy lists [might be possible to resolve]

Rambox I never heard of, but it seems to be the Perfect Replacement!
Setting up and adding the two accounts I have to use took 1 min, I see all my logs, it works flawlessly. So far so good :pimp

Let's discuss if you have other suggestions, Help Each Other to get rid of skype and live a healthier and happier life.

skype on linux is some next level shit...

You can always install older version of Skype as well (as you say about ICQ) and uncheck the box mark for auto- update. That's what I did.

Fuck Skype. Viber is Skype without the BS.

Works perfectly in Linux and Android. Maybe Winblowz too, but IDK. I don't use MS shit anymore.

According to microsoft, they say how old version wont work anymore, tho been a while since i runned old version.

Seems that rambox does nothing but loads web.skype.com in window.

It's not that easy when most of people still using only skype.

Is this the same though? Seems like viber is like whatsapp - for your mobile phone and number.
While skype and icq can be standalone programs.

Honestly, I get the sentiment. The desktop app on Win 10 has been failing to sync properly for ages now.

I guess you are right, but this way somehow it is very smooth and easy to work with it. I am thinking of adding slack and google hangouts to it too, thus I'd have 1 stuff running all the accounts. It took 1 minute to set up and have perfectly running two accounts of skype. :2 cents: And That's all I need. :pimp

What's wrong with Skype? I don't like the new version, so I am using the old version. No biggie. Use it every day, constantly.

Surprising to hear about all the hate for Skype. I really like it. I run Skype on my Mac and iPhone and it works perfectly.

I had to update my windows only for skype

They'll get to you sooner or later.

Then you might lose years of conversations and contact info in a forced upgrade.

And maybe they'll delete your account for the fuck of it.

I'm wasting a day backing up data from another chat site that just required a forced upgrade. Downloaded the new version on another phone and lost all my data on the interface, but was able to at least export it all and save to disks.

This kind of shit is why the internet officially sucks now.

I agree, but what can you do when many people (clients) use it, so it is highly unlikely that they will all switch to something else.

i've used this constantly for years without a single issue. why would your chat history be in their hands exactly when its stored physically on your hd?

By that logic i would have to run hundred and hundred different im systems just because someone is using it. Only e-mail is mandatory communication method, everything else is optional.

Of course the history is stored on the server side. Gov contracts. How do you think these sites actually make money?

Also, if you don't backup then when you are locked out for failing to update or whatever nonsense reason (requiring more ID, etc.) then you can't access your data anymore, unless you can extract it somehow. Which I did. But Joe Average, who doesn't know how to extract, he will lose access to his data.

As for Skype I did indeed lose all my history when they did a forced upgrade on me.

And, it's gone.

Anyone else get this from skype: "we need to know a little bit more about you" shit? Asking for everything but a stool sample. Almost as bad as paxum. I guess i answered something wrong and now I can't login.

Skype is great for video calls but I rarely do those.

My production partners and I use Slack and my team in the studio use Flock. Sucks I couldn't get them both on the same platform, but both beat using an IM app in 2018.

There are MANY alternatives... Viber, WhatApp, Telegram... There are also slack, flock for geeks and discord used by gamers...
