Snowboarding - helmet or not?

I was showing a Dutch guy some pics from a recent boarding trip and he reckoned it was insane that nobody in the pics had head protection on. Just wondering if many people who go boarding do bother with some kind of headgear, other than just a dodgy hat to keep it warm.

boneprone 04-28-2003 02:25 PM

do they really wear wooden shoes?

tsp 04-28-2003 02:28 PM

if you're confident in your skills and aren't doing anything to risky I don't see why you need one...:2 cents:

Yes Snowboarders are all helmets :thumbsup

Unless you go extreme snowboarding off a cliff, wear a helmet.

If it's just to a resort, and you're not a klutz, save yourself some humiliation and put the helmet to the side.

Jakke PNG 04-28-2003 02:33 PM

Never used one. Hit my head multiple times, can you tell?

Fletch XXX 04-28-2003 02:36 PM

my ass needs a helmet when i snowboard.

hahah

Fletch XXX 04-28-2003 02:37 PM

or snow ski for that matter.

:1orglaugh

MCsteve-matrix 04-28-2003 02:37 PM

never worn a helmet in 14 seasons. although i am getting older i've actually started debating wearing one in icy conditions.

snowpimp 04-28-2003 02:41 PM

helmets are popular here for people who jump 40 foot cliffs, do inverts in the pipe/jumps....and for pussies.

Tipsy 04-28-2003 02:44 PM

As a rule it's my face that hits the snow/ice hard and not my head so unless I went for a full face guard it seems it'd do little. Besides a little danger in life makes it worth living :)

Probably the biggest reason though is while I'm happy to wear the most stupid/outrageous hats I can find, wearing a hemlet seems to be going too far. I've yet to see someone who's not chucking himself down an almost vertical drop from a helicopter who doesn't look daft in one.

It was this guys reaction though that I found odd. He thought it crazy not to wear one even on groomed piste.

ive had a few concussions from boarding without a helmet...

head -> ice -> bam

it's up to you..:glugglug

I wear a helmet to compensate for my enormous balls.

It looks funny and feels awkward ~ but I still prefer it to being retarded.

Jakke PNG 04-28-2003 03:47 PM

My skull is broken. Not from snowboarding though. I also doubt a helmet would have helped. :)

MCsteve-matrix 04-28-2003 03:53 PM

Yay for meat helmets!

Now that's the sort of helmet that'd be worth wearing!

Trip before last there were scotsmen boarding down the mountain with kilts and nothing underneath. Hmmm...wonder if that'd make a new gay niche - snowboarding scottish flashers?

Kat - Fast 04-28-2003 04:05 PM

Don't start me off on one....

C_U_Next_Tuesday 04-28-2003 05:16 PM

i dont wear a helmet.. but i have my kids wear one. I just ride..i dont jump or lose control too much..although i am sure my tits saved my breast bone form being snapped in half the other day...had a dude fall down right in front of me..we were both hauling ass, i clipped the end of his snowboard and was airborn face first..slam..my tits abosrbed the blow..my whole torso is bruised and sore... but head ok.

i feel kids should wear them.. they seem to have no fear....as far as adults go, its their choice, they know the pros and cons.

im with fletch... if they only made ass helmets. last time i went snowboarding it hurt to sit down for a week or so. i have to wear a helmet when riding a bike or rollorblading at a state park by my house because someone fell and died from hitting their head so they made it a rule.

Peter Romero 04-28-2003 05:30 PM

You better wear a helmet if you're in my fuckin way!!!

I hit the back of my head HARD the the icy hardpack and I went blind for 5 minutes, after I woke up. I was FREAKING out I thought I was gonna be blind for the rest of my life, scariest shit happening to me ever. So I wear a helmet if its really icy, I don't give a fuck if I look stupid.

I was thinking about doing the same thing - not attaching my tits to my ass, but buying some of those padded shorts. My ass is pretty padded with fat at the minute but with a little luck and calorie/fat content watching I should be a bit slimmer by the next time we head up a mountain.
