What is the established standard for counting uniques?

I think that adding a cookie to all visitors who come - then searching if they are a dupe dupe first by IP, then if IP is a duplicate, then by cookie seems to be an effictive way.

I'm really curious how most go about things. Not the code itself, but just the ideas.

There is no established standard for counting uniques, which is why every sponsor's stats look different.

Not true, they are the only ones that can verify it. It would still be
easy to "lose" signups/rebills.

This sounds like a question for Serge!

I was just curious how people did it. I realize that most do it differently, it was poor wording of the question :)
